Dansville State Game Area shooting range opening Nov. 1

The Department of Natural Resources today announced that its Dansville shooting range in Ingham County – located at 1819 Kelly Road in Mason, within the Dansville State Game Area – will reopen Saturday, Nov.1, after extensive renovations have been made to the facility. The range will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday through Monday, and closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. The last shot will be fired at 4:45 p.m. Plans are to close the range for the winter Dec. 15 and reopen in the spring as weather allows.

For the sight-in season, amenities include four stations at 100 yards, three stations at 50 yards, three stations at 25 yards and two stations at 10 yards. The range features roofs over the shooting stations to protect shooters from the weather, accessible limestone pathways, accessible paths from the parking lot and a portable toilet.

The range will be staffed to assist with safety operations. There is no cost to use the range.

The range rules are as follows:

  • Paper targets with a bulls-eye pattern or a depiction of legal game may be used.
  • Shooters must provide their own eye and ear protection, ammunition and targets.
  • Shooters 15 years old and younger must have adult supervision.
  • The following are prohibited at the range: human form silhouettes or metal targets; .50 caliber BMG and larger centerfire rifles; muzzleloaders larger than .80 caliber; and incendiary, explosive and/or tracer ammunition.

Improvements to the range were funded by grants from the Natural Resources Trust Fund and the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act (Pittman-Robertson funds), and shooting range program income funds.
