First eaglet hatches at Platte River State Fish Hatchery

GW:  I love this technology…unimagined only a few decades ago.

Eagle and eaglet in nest at Platte River State Fish Hatchery

One of two eaglets has hatched at the eagle’s nest on the grounds of the Platte River State Fish Hatchery. It hatched in the early hours today, April 19.

Viewers may want to glue themselves to the Carbon TV Eagle Cam. The second eaglet hopefully will hatch at any moment, as pips (small holes pecked into the shell of an egg from a parent eagle’s beak) are now present on the egg in the nest on the grounds of the hatchery.

Viewers can watch the action unfold live in real time on CarbonTV.com.

The eggs were laid March 12 and 15. Incubation typically takes 30 to 35 days, with the mother and father eagles rolling the eggs and rotating nesting duties to keep them warm. The pair’s nest is 100 feet above the ground, located on the Platte River.

A community forum has developed on the CarbonTV page, with users conversing about the eagles’ habits and marking the time of each action.

A partnership between the DNR and Carbon Media Group allows the public a rare chance to watch, for free, a majestic pair of nesting eagles currently in residence at the Platte River State Fish Hatchery near the Benzie County town of Beulah. The Eagle Cam will continue to stream throughout the summer while the eaglets grow.

The CarbonTV Eagle Cam live streams 24/7 from carbontv.com/cams/carbontv-eagle-cam. The site also features taped clips of the eagles engaging in recent activities, including eating a rabbit, building and clearing their nest, and being visited by great horned owls.

Viewers should be advised that as awesome as nature is, it is also harsh at times. It is entirely possible they may see unpleasant events and natural circumstances (predation, disease, etc.) in this active nest. If such events occur, no human intervention by the DNR or any other agency will occur. View at your own discretion.

Please note, the eagle cam is streamed most easily via Google Chrome. A download speed of at least 5 mpbs is recommended for optimum viewing.
