Tucson, Ariz. – The world’s greatest convention dedicated to North American and international hunting will open its doors on January 23, 2013 to begin the 41st Annual Safari Club International Hunters’ Convention. Safari Club presents Michigan hunters with sporting arms at September NRC meeting

Three Michigan deer hunters were recently rewarded for their participation earlier this spring in the Department of Natural Resources’ state harvest survey. The trio was presented with sporting arms by Safari Club International at the September meeting of the Natural Resources Commission in Lansing.

Donald Fry, 66, of Marlette; Londa Merrill, 62, of Cornell; and Donald Weiderman, 49, of Mendon, were presented, respectively, with a Remington rifle, a PSE compound bow and a Traditions muzzleloader – simply for returning their Department of Natural Resources surveys in a timely manner. The winners’ names were selected randomly from the pool of all hunter surveys received. Read more

SCI Urging Senate to Pass H.R. 4089

Washington, D.C. – Safari Club International (SCI) members will participate in more than 170 meetings this week with members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate on behalf of hunters everywhere. SCI’s lobby day on Capitol Hill represents the largest annual gathering of U.S. hunters in Washington, DC. This year’s focus will be working with the U.S. Senate to pass H.R. 4089, the Sportsmen’s Heritage Act of 2012. Read more

Sportsmen’s Heritage Act Clears Key Hurdle

The newly introduced House Resolution 4089—strongly supported by the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA) – has cleared the U.S. House of Representatives’ Natural Resources Committee and awaits a vote before the full House.  The bill passed the committee by a vote of 27 to 16.

HR 4089, which is a package of four high-priority bills will: Classify BLM and US Forest Service land as open to hunting, fishing and recreational shooting unless closed or restricted based on scientific evidence;    Confirm that the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cannot ban lead in traditional ammunition or in sport fishing gear; Protect recreational shooting on BLM National Monument land; and Allow the import of legally hunted polar bear trophies now tangled in federal red-tape. On Poaching in South Africa

Washington, D.C. – On Tuesday, February 22, 2012, NBC’s “Rock Center with Brian Williams” aired a detailed segment on rhino poaching in South Africa. Because the price of rhino horn has increased dramatically over the past few decades, statistics show poachers killed nearly 450 rhinos last year. In 2012 alone, poachers have killed one rhino every 18 hours. Read more

SCI Helps Ensure New Jersey Bear Hunt Will Proceed Monday

Defeat of Lawsuit Keeps Hunt on Schedule 

Washington, D.C. – Safari Club International (SCI) and the New Jersey State Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs (Federation) have again helped successfully defend against a legal challenge aimed at stopping the New Jersey black bear hunt. Today, a State appellate court upheld the decision authorizing the hunt. Barring reversal by the New Jersey Supreme Court, the hunt is scheduled to begin on Monday, December 5, 2011. This will be the first time in recent history that the State will be able to hold a hunt for two consecutive years. SCI and the Federation applaud the efforts of the New Jersey state wildlife professionals and decision-makers. Read more

NRA Victory in Arizona Battle Over Use of Lead Ammunition

In a major legal victory, a federal judge has ruled in favor of the National Rifle Association and the federal Bureau of Land Management, throwing a lawsuit filed by an environmental group, the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD), out of U.S. District Court in Phoenix, Ariz. The case is Center for Biological Diversity v. U.S. Bureau of Land Management. Safari Club International had joined the case as a “friend of the court” and assisted NRA with its successful efforts.
