Keep Warm During Cold Hunts

By Glen Wunderlich

You can blame it all on me.  Just point your index finger in my direction when they ask, “Did you order this?”  And, when the first one of the season wonders if it’s cold enough for you, just mumble what you will.  This arctic blast is entirely my fault.

Hunker down, put another log on the fire and add an extra blanket.  It’s now unofficially late deer season and cold comes with the territory.  Bring on the white stuff!  In my seventh decade as a Michigander, I’ve learned to love what others dread.

No, I’m not a masochist.  However, I’ve learned that when the temperature drops, more fuel is required.  And, when it comes to whitetail deer, fuel is food.  Find food.  Find deer.  And, sit.

Here are a few tips to make the most of coping with Mother Nature’s mean streak.

Comfort is the key and www.HuntComfort.com has the best seat in the woods.  Handmade in Alabama, the gel/foam cushions can make a long sit downright delightful.  A bit pricey but I own several of them and wouldn’t think of sitting without one.  They are also great for auto races, ballgames, and anywhere the tailbone meets seats.   If you are looking for a quality gift for the outdoors person in your life, this one stands the test of time.  They’re made tough.

Hunting shacks have become quite popular in Michigan, since firearm hunting from elevated stands has been legalized.  Heating them is easy with a Mr. Heater Portable Buddy Heater.  They’ll put out 4,000 to 9,000 BTUs (or even more with some models) and they do it quietly – an essential element to any hunter.  New models have a pilot light that keeps the unit in stand-by mode until the heat level switch is turned.  They can be connected to a bulk tank or the one-pound propane cylinders.

It is important to note that propane can contain contaminants.  To safeguard your heater, install an inexpensive fuel filter for cheap insurance.

One feature I don’t like is the spark igniter.  It works well but is too noisy – especially in the still of pre-dawn sitting.  Make sure to take a long-reach lighter with you to light it silently.  As an added insurance policy, I also have waterproof stick matches on hand for times when cold temperatures prevent butane gas lighters from operating.  You can make your own waterproof matches by melting some wax over stick matches.  I keep mine in a small container attached to the heater’s frame with electrical tape.

These heaters are readily available locally and can be purchased for about $80 when on sale.  Cabela’s has some reconditioned ones on sale now for $55 at www.Cabelas.com.

Make sure not to let anyone pull the wool over your eyes, but if they want to pull it over your toes, consider them as friends.  If you are choosing socks or other wool garments, look for the percentage of wool listed on the label.  A small amount of synthetic stretch fabric is good; too much and it takes away from the cost, as well as the warming factor.

Now, get out there and point your nose to the wind, because the hunting’s about to heat up.
