Arizona: Gila Trout Stocked in Marijilda and Frye Creeks

Biologists and volunteers successfully stock Gila trout in Marijilda and Frye creeks

Staff from AZGFD’s Native Trout and Chub program, along with other staff from AZGFD, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service, and volunteers from organizations such as Trout Unlimited, Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, and Arizona Wildlife Federation, successfully stocked Gila trout in both Marijilda and Frye Creeks in mid October.

A total of 250 Gila trout (Whiskey Creek lineage) were stocked into the upper section of Marijilda Creek, while 500 (South Diamond lineage) were stocked in the lower section of Marijilda Creek. At Frye Creek, 300 Gila trout (South Diamond) were successfully stocked. This was the second consecutive year of Gila trout stockings in Frye Creek following the Frye Fire in 2017, which eliminated the Gila trout population at that time.

Tennessee: Tennessee Aquarium, Partners Release Sturgeon into Tennessee River

Chattanooga, TN – Beneath cornflower blue skies and surprisingly balmy weather on Friday afternoon, a group of scientists released about 100 baby dinosaurs into the chilly waters of the Tennessee River near downtown Chattanooga.

The team worked quickly and efficiently to shift dozens of juvenile Lake Sturgeon into the river from the water-filled plastic bins that were used to transport them to the release site from the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute. The move was the culmination of more than a year of continuous care by Aquarium scientists.

This release was a bright moment in a year that has seen significant upheaval and hurdles thanks to the pandemic, says Dr. Anna George, the Aquarium’s vice president of conservation science and education. Read more

Incentivized Harvest of Brown Trout on Colorado River

MARBLE CANYON, Ariz. — The National Park Service (NPS) and Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) are working with partners and seeking the public’s help in addressing the threat of brown trout in the Colorado River. Beginning Nov. 11, 2020, the National Park Service at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area will implement an Incentivized Harvest, a pilot research program, to reduce the growing population of brown trout in the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam.

The Incentivized Harvest will reward anglers $25 for each brown trout over 6 inches that is caught and removed from the river. The brown trout population in the Lees Ferry Reach has steadily increased since 2014. As adults, brown trout primarily feed on other fish, potentially threatening downstream native fish species. The goal of this program is to determine if an Incentivized Harvest can help manage and reduce the number of brown trout in the Colorado River between Glen Canyon Dam and the mouth of the Paria River. The initial research into the use of this tool is designed to last three to four years at which time the program will be evaluated for its effectiveness. Read more

NSSF Cancels 2021 SHOT Show

Statement from NSSF President & CEO Joe Bartozzi:

Due to the recent rise in COVID-19 cases throughout the world, NSSF, the firearm industry trade association, today makes the difficult announcement that the 2021 SHOT Show has been cancelled.

NSSF has remained in constant communication with Nevada officials throughout the year in our planning for the 2021 show. While there has been a concerted effort to expand the allowable levels for large gatherings by the county and state, with positivity rates peaking during our key planning period we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 show. Sadly, these spikes are currently transpiring worldwide. Given the sheer complexities, diminishing timeline and immense logistical planning required to conduct a trade show as large as SHOT, NSSF simply could not move forward at this point with so many unknowns and variables. We truly appreciate the guidance of Nevada and Las Vegas officials in allowing us to communicate this news to our exhibitors and attendees well in advance of the show. We would also like to thank the Sands directly for their help and efforts to navigate this unprecedented situation. Read more

Turn Your Phone Into A Fishfinder

OLATHE, Kan. – Garmin® International, Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ:GRMN), the world’s leading marine electronics manufacturer1, today introduced STRIKER™ Cast— a castable fishfinder that delivers sonar wirelessly to a smartphone or tablet.

No boat? No problem. STRIKER Cast is a versatile sonar device that anglers can take with them wherever they go. Just cast it out from where the fish are biting that day – the bank, a dock, or even from a kayak – to view fish and structure in crisp detail on the free STRIKER Cast app, compatible with both Apple® and Android™ devices. With STRIKER Cast, anglers can even create their own fishing maps2 for an even more detailed look at the area they’re fishing.

“Now more than ever, consumers are finding ways to spend more time outside enjoying the great outdoors, and for so many, that includes fishing,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales. “Whether you’re new to the sport or a seasoned angler fishing from shorelines, docks or piers, STRIKER Cast will help you identify structure and fish, right from the palm of your hand.”

Designed for use in freshwater and saltwater (and even for ice fishing), STRIKER Cast delivers excellent sonar performance in both shallow water and deep water – from less than 2 ft. to 150 ft. – and will wirelessly stream sonar and water temperature data from up to 200 feet away. It delivers easy-to-understand traditional 2-D sonar and ice fishing flasher modes, with setting adjustments for gain, range and more. Anglers can even turn on fish icons to view more realistic images of the fish targets and their depth readings directly in the app, so it’s easy to know exactly where to drop the line. Read more

Silver Carp Fitted with Tracking Devices on Mississippi River

As part of extensive efforts to prevent the spread of invasive carp, four silver carp were recently captured, fitted with tracking devices and released in Pool 8 of the Mississippi River near La Crosse, Wisconsin.

A commercial fishing operation contracted by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to conduct netting in the area captured the invasive carp. Contract commercial netting operations will continue this fall while river conditions permit.

The recent netting operation came in response to captures of invasive carp in Pool 8 during spring carp surveillance. The DNR is working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Wisconsin DNR and commercial fishing operators to conduct large-scale netting, studies of the captured carp, and increased monitoring. Coast Guard Sets Record for Interdictions of Mexican Lanchas Fishing Illegally in U.S. Waters

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Coast Guard law enforcement crews interdicted a record-setting number of lanchas throughout the Gulf of Mexico for fiscal year 2020.

Since October 2019, Coast Guard assets and personnel detected a total of 326 lanchas and interdicted 136.

Since the first recorded lancha interdiction in the late 1980s, the Coast Guard has seen a significant uptick in the detection of the vessels, particularly in the past two years, recording 74 lancha interdictions in the previous fiscal year.

The Coast Guard utilizes a layered approach for operations through aircraft, small boats, and cutters, as well as improved technology on those assets, resulting in the drastic increase in lancha interdictions.

“This past year, we applied an unprecedented level of effort along the Maritime Boundary Line towards countering this threat to our natural resources, and the result speaks for itself,” said Lt. Cmdr. Joseph Prado, Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi enforcement chief. “However, we will not be content until we see an end to this affront on our maritime sovereignty. We will continue to leverage all available technology and partnerships to increase our effectiveness. The boating public can play a key role in assisting the Coast Guard. Successful interdictions are oftentimes the result of timely reports from the maritime community. We encourage all boaters to continue to report all suspected illegal fishing.” Read more
