Henry Repeating Arms Donates 50 Custom Rifles for 10-Year-Old Florida Girl’s Cancer Treatments

Henry Repeating Arms, the world’s leading lever-action firearm manufacturer, announced today the release of a limited-edition series of fifty “Team Baylee” lever-action rifles to raise funds for the family of 10-year-old Baylee Rish of Wewahitchka, Florida. The donated rifles, which are now available for purchase while supplies last are a continuation of the company’s ‘Guns For Great Causes’ charitable efforts, focusing primarily on pediatric cancer cases and children’s cancer hospitals.

In December 2022, Baylee was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL), a rare and aggressive form of blood and bone marrow cancer. Treatment is intense, with some weeks consisting of up to four consecutive days of chemotherapy treatment, spinal tap chemo injections, and spinal bone marrow sampling, and there is still more to come as her course of treatment runs through March 2025.

Available exclusively through Henry Repeating Arms’ website, all proceeds from the “Team Baylee” rifle sales will be given to the Rish family to help offset mounting insurance copays and the out-of-pocket expenses associated with traveling 2.5 hours each way for treatment.

Additionally, the first and last rifles in the collection, serial numbers TEAMBAYLEE01 and TEAMBAYLEE50, are up for auction to allow collectors the chance to enhance the fundraising effort. Total proceeds should exceed $40,000.

“There are few things in this world more unfair than a childhood cancer diagnosis,” said Anthony Imperato, Founder and CEO of Henry Repeating Arms. “To endure what these kids go through during treatment and still be able to crack a smile that lights up the room is nothing short of awe-inspiring. The opportunity to help these families is a part of our business that I deeply cherish, and I’m sending a big hug to Baylee and her family.” Read more

The Marlin Model 81 Still Gets the Job Done

By  Glen Wunderlich

Charter Member Professional Outdoor Media Association (POMA)

I love my Marlin model 81 bolt-action .22 rimfire rifle.  Manufactured in years 1937-1940, it still produces some startling accuracy – especially with anything in the sub-sonic category.

Marlin model 81 rimfire shoots shorts, longs and long rifle ammo

Mine has been relegated to garage duty and it’s an important niche for this small game getter and takes out pesky red squirrels near the home front.  Like many vintage rifles, the trigger was creepy and heavy, but a professional gunsmith at Williams Gun Sight in Michigan massaged it to a degree suited for accuracy.

Atop the barrel sits a Hawke HD, 3×9 power optic with adjustable parallax – a good match for the closer shots, where most of my shots are taken.  Since the scope allows for adjustments down to 30 feet, it provides the necessary parallax adjustment for anything close to far away.

Some 35 years ago, I planted 2,000 conifer seedlings that have grown to harbor all kinds of perching birds and way too many damaging red squirrels.  While working at endless projects in the garage, I keep an eye to the back window for the troublemakers and the Marlin is always ready to answer the call.

The super slow CCI Quiet .22 rimfire ammo is propelled at a breath-taking speed of 710 feet-per-second from the muzzle making about as much noise as snapping fingers, but the 40-grain bullets supply all the energy necessary for ethical kills.

CCI Quiet .22 Rimfire Ammo

CCI also offers a 45-grain bullet with a bit more velocity of 835 fps, but it’s not necessary – and, makes more noise.  Both of these offerings are quite a bit slower than any other sub-sonic ammo available in the 1,000+ fps range but are much quieter.

Recently, I had been using some CCI CBs, which are 29-grain solid shorts but ran out and had to switch to the CCI Quiet fodder.  Much to my surprise, the Quiet ammo shot to the same point of impact at 25 yards with absolutely no scope adjustments necessary.  However, after using the short 29-grain ammo for a long time, I found the longer Quiet ammo would not chamber and would get stuck in the chamber when closing the bolt.  It took a good scrubbing with Hoppe’s gun cleaner and that was all the prep it needed.

I’d have to estimate the number of red squirrels taken this year at dozens.  I recycle them at a particular site in the back 40 by placing them on a stump for the vultures, hawks, and crows or whatever else enjoys them.

FBI Partners with USPS for Fingerprinting to Appeal Firearm Purchase Denials

To streamline the process for individuals to appeal firearm purchase denials from the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), the FBI recently partnered with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to assist individuals who have registered with the Identity History Summary Check (IdHSC) program. Registrants can register with a participating post office for digital fingerprinting services. For a $50 fee, the post office will submit the registered customer’s fingerprints to the FBI.

Pursuant to Public Law 92-544, registrants can obtain an IdHSC (also known as a “rap sheet”) for different kinds of NICS appeals:

  • Individuals may challenge their IdHSC record. Examples of challenges could be if the individual thinks a record entry is incorrect, or if an entry for a record is incomplete.
  • Individuals may challenge firearm purchase denials. Possible reasons for incorrect denials could be cases of mistaken identity or incorrect entries in IdHSC records.
  • Individuals may wish to participate in the Voluntary Appeal File. This file contains clarifying information to help reduce unnecessary delays or incorrect denials for firearm purchasers who have been denied more than once or frequently experience delays. Reasons for purchasers to have extra difficulty can include instances of identity theft or mistaken identity

Readers can find more information about the IdHSC program here.
