Soaring Ammunition Market and a Record Week for Distributors

Ankeny, IA – As we pass the 15-day mark, in the U.S.’s Flattening the COVID-19 Curve timeline, the National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers (NASGW) SCOPE data platform reports another record week in firearms and ammunition shipments. Ammunition sales nearly doubled for the week ending March 21. When we look at year-to-date (YTD) numbers for 2020, ammunition sales are up 49% compared to the three-year average (3YR AVG), and 188% and the week-over-week, growing from $9.9m to $18.6m. .SCOPE DLX Trend–A-032120

Firearms shipments were up 67% on the week. As of the 21st, they posted a more modest growth of 2% YTD against the 3YR AVG. As firearms shipments keep rising, keeping the supply chain moving will be the challenge in meeting the demand.SCOPE DLX Trend–F-032120 Read more

NSSF-Adjusted NICS Checks Jump 80% for March 2020

The March 2020 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 2,375,525 is an increase of 80.4 percent compared to the March 2019 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 1,317,114. For comparison, the unadjusted March 2020 FBI NICS figure 3,709,562 reflects a 42.4 percent increase from the unadjusted FBI NICS figure of 2,604,927 in March 2019.

The first quarter 2020 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 4,841,126 reflects an increase of 41.8 percent over the 3,414,361 figure for first quarter 2019.

Please note: Twenty-five states currently have at least one qualified alternative permit, which under the Brady Act allows the permit-holder, who has undergone a background check to obtain the permit, to purchase a firearm from a licensed dealer without a separate additional background check for that transfer. The number of NICS checks in these states does not include these legal transfers based on qualifying permits and NSSF does not adjust for these transfers. Recently, the states of Alabama and Michigan had law changes that affected their Brady Law standing which removed qualifying alternate permits usage for firearm transactions. These changes went into effect July 22, 2019 for Alabamaand March 3, 2020 for MichiganIn March 2020, Alabama state’s NSSF-adjusted NICS was 212.1 percent higher than March 2019, which accounts for an additional 41,348 checks over this time last year. March 2020 NICS numbers for Michigan were up 210.8% over March 2019 and account for an additional 57,599 checks. Read more

SAF: NJ Gun Shops Open

N.J. GOV. MURPHY BACKS DOWN, ALLOWS GUN SHOPS BACK OPEN IN SAF VICTORY

BELLEVUE, WA – The Second Amendment Foundation declare victory today when New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy backed away from his earlier position on gun shop operations in the state during the current COVID-19 panic, and will now allow operations by appointment.

SAF sued Murphy and acting State Police Supt. Col. Patrick Callahan in U.S. District Court last week, seeking a preliminary injunction and temporary restraining order. They were ultimately joined by the New Jersey Second Amendment Society, Legacy Indoor Range and Armory LLC and the Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC), Racing Rails LLC d/b/a Legend Firearms and several private citizens. Plaintiffs were represented by noted civil rights attorney David Jensen of New York and Adam Kraut of California.

“We’re delighted that Gov. Murphy has reversed course on this matter, even if it took a lawsuit to get him to do it,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. “Our lawsuit cut right to the heart of what the Second Amendment is all about, which is personal protection during emergency situations like the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that has gripped the nation. Coronovirus: Firearm Industry Resources and Updates

The National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the firearm and ammunition industry, is working hard during this national crisis to make sure that our members are allowed to stay in business, providing safety and security for Americans and crucial products for members of the law enforcement and military communities. Food, water, shelter and adequate medical care are paramount for survival, but so too is the ability for individuals to defend themselves, their families, as well as their home, business and property.

Our work is paying off on the federal level, with our successful efforts to inform the Department of Homeland Security on the essential nature of our firearm and ammunition product manufacturers, retailers, importers, distributors and ranges – all of which are now explicitly listed as part of our nation’s Critical Infrastructure. This list of essential workers, while non-binding, is the guidance used by states and localities in determining their own restrictions. The full guidance is available here.

As governors and local governments continue to issue and revise orders restricting non-essential businesses in their jurisdictions, NSSF is on the frontlines in every state to represent our members and educate lawmakers on the essential nature of our industry and of the Second Amendment. At a time when the right of Americans to protect themselves, their families and their property is paramount, NSSF is grateful to the governors and local officials that are putting politics aside and allowing our industry to remain open. We are tracking each state on our website here, with updates several times a day.

In order to ensure our members have the tools they need to stay open, we are also in contact with the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check (NICS) System and with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to seek crucial information our members need with regard to background checks, operating under social-distancing guidelines and forms. The firearm and ammunition industry is dedicated to compliance and to keeping our communities safe. During times of crisis, our members are working diligently to meet consumer demand, while ensuring firearms do not fall into the wrong hands, and that new owners are educated on the safe use and storage of firearms.

The firearm and ammunition industry is present in every community. We know first-hand the importance of ensuring that families can focus on what’s important right now: following government guidance to help stop the spread of this deadly virus. Whether it is producing and providing firearms or ammunition to military, law enforcement and law-abiding citizens or ensuring that they have access to shooting ranges for training, the firearm industry is a critical component of our nation’s security, public safety and economic well-being. We must remain open for business.

Shoot-On.com Launches PREPARE • SUSTAIN • DEFEND Series

March, Valparaiso, IN – Shoot-On.com, the premiere source for gear reviews and DIY media content covering the shooting sports, hunting, and archery segments, has launched the first in its PREPARE • SUSTAIN • DEFEND™ series of articles intended to reach out to non- and first-time firearm owners and hunters to help our fellow Americans through the global pandemic.

While the Covid-19 pandemic is impacting all Americans, it is presenting an incalculable opportunity for the shooting and hunting communities and the industries which support 2nd Amendment rights and the outdoor sports. For the first time in generations, those who have held views opposing firearm ownership and hunting are understanding what shooters and hunters have always known — personal and family protection are the individual’s responsibilities, not the state’s, and hunting provides a sustainable and healthy means to feed our families. NSSF: Trump Administration Designates Industry as “Critical Infrastructure”

Department of Homeland Security includes firearm manufacturing, distribution, retail and ranges as essential critical services.

NEWTOWN, Conn. — The National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®), the trade association for the firearm and ammunition industry, is grateful for the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) inclusion of the firearm industry’s manufacturing, distribution, retail and range businesses as essential critical services that should remain open during the COVID-19 pandemic. NSSF has been working closely with the Trump Administration and DHS to convey the important role the firearm and ammunition industry performs for national security, public safety, and the ability for continued exercise of individual constitutional liberties and self-protection.

“We are deeply appreciative to the Trump Administration and Department of Homeland Security for recognizing the vital role our industry fulfills in our nation,” said Lawrence G. Keane, Senior Vice President and General Counsel for NSSF. “We have seen over the past week hundreds of thousands, even millions of Americans choosing to exercise their right to keep and bear arms to ensure their safety and the safety of loved ones during these uncertain times. Americans must not be denied the ability to exercise that right to lawfully purchase and acquire firearms during times of emergency. This guidance from the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) is crucial to governors and local officials as they craft the orders to preserve public health.” Read more
