CMP Clinics offer Top Notch Marksmanship Training

Aug 14, 2018

In recognition of National Shooting Sports Month, a look at how the Civilian Marksmanship Program works to help spread the love of shooting sports.

Before the firing of the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) National Trophy events, the National Matches schedule offers training clinics for all levels of shooters to receive personalized help and information.

For junior shooters, the United States Marine Corps (USMC) Junior Highpower Rifle Clinic offers one-on-one training, dry firing and class work focused on safety, trigger control, fundamentals and effects of weather, among other things. For those looking for more than the basics, an Advanced CMP Highpower Clinic offers marksmen supplementary training, dry firing exercises and position work.

Many juniors (age 20 and below) attend the USMC clinic year after year, using the opportunity to freshen up their skills before the bigger National Trophy matches, to socialize with other juniors and to receive coaching.

A classroom session is held on the first day of the clinic, during which basic safety and marksmanship fundamentals are covered. Previous attendees are released to Petrarca Range for dry-fire practice, while newer shooters remain in the classroom for additional instruction. When the classroom portion is finished, the classroom juniors join the rest of the clinic participants for snap-in and dry-fire positioning.

The Marines show several examples of their own standing, sitting and prone positions and break them down before having all participants get into their positions and dry fire. Coaches are open to answering questions and to helping each junior find the positions that work best for him or her. Read more

McMillan Adjustable A6 Stocks

New Fore End Profile Enhances Multiple Shooting Styles

Phoenix, AZ – McMillan® Fiberglass Stocks—manufacturer of the most widely issued tactical stocks in the world—introduces the new Adjustable A6 stock to the A-series line of precision rifle stocks. This new rifle stock is based off the popular A-5 with three exceptions – flat sides on the fore arm for shooting off barricades, a tapered butthook, and no texture on the fore end and pistol grip.

Blending design elements from the tactical A-series and McMillan’s Benchrest series stocks, the Adjustable A6 boasts a more angular fore end profile intended to maximize stability. The flat fore end bottom, for example, is optimized for shooting over barricades and preventing “stock roll” while the angled sides are ideally suited for use with most tripod mounting systems. A swell-palmed grip provides a comfortable hold for both large and small hand shooters. Also featured is the buttstock hook which enables users to maneuver the rifle with the non-shooting hand, a flat butt stock bottom that supports rear stability and an integral adjustable cheek piece for the perfect cheek weld.

The Adjustable A6 comes with three inlet options: flat top (no inlet), basic inlet (action outline and barrel channel), and full inlet (action and barrel inlet, molded-in color, cheekpiece is extra). As with all McMillan stocks, customers can choose from a wide selection of colors, finishes, and customizable accessories. Read more

CMP Small Arms Firing School & EIC Match

By Steve Cooper, CMP North General Manager

CAMP PERRY, OHIO – The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) has announced its first stand-alone Small Arms Firing School (SAFS) & AR-15 Excellence-In-Competition (EIC) rifle match at Washtenaw Sportsman’s Club in Ypsilanti, Michigan on Sunday, August 26, 2018.

Register for the class and match today at: https://ct.thecmp.org/app/v1/index.php?do=match&task=edit&match=17326#

or contact Amy Cantu at CMP at 419-635-2141, extension 602.

It’s the first time the CMP will conduct the SAFS program outside of its normal instruction and match firing locations at the National Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio or at one of its travel games events in Oklahoma, North Carolina, Alabama, Vermont and Arizona. It will be the first of many SAFS-only CMP events to be located throughout the U.S. in the years to come.

“Our CMP leadership team would like us to take our hallmark entry-level marksmanship course and match on the road to venues across the U.S.,” said Christie Sewell, CMP’s Programs Chief.  “It will give many people an opportunity to participate in an effective CMP event closer to their home,” she said.

“This highly-popular marksmanship course and match provides participants a great education and the opportunity to pick up their first four introductory “leg points” toward their 30 required to earn a Distinguished Rifleman badge – an honor that most competitive marksmen aspire to win,” Sewell said. SIG SAUER Receives Award from DoD

SIG SAUER Receives Award from DoD for Suppressed Upper Receiver Group (SURG) with MCX Rifle System

Newington, N.H.   – U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has announced the selection of the SIG SAUER MCX System for the Suppressed Upper Receiver Group (SURG) for the existing M4A1 Carbine. The SIG SAUER MCX SURG System will be an upgrade to the current M4A1 Carbine – a fully automatic version of the M4 Carbine – that went into service in 1994.

The DoD began the SURG program to upgrade, and optimize military weapons for continuous, suppressed use on the battlefield. The SIG SAUER MCX Rifle System outperformed the competition through the demanding, rigorous, and grueling testing to receive the SURG award. The SIG SAUER suppressor withstood the stringent stress and torture requirements set by DoD for firing specifications, vibration, sound, and temperature requirements to ensure soldier safety.

“The requirements set by DOD for the SURG procurement demanded significant improvements in reliability, thermal characteristics, and durability that went well above anything we are currently seeing in the industry,” said Ron Cohen, President and CEO of SIG SAUER, Inc. “We worked very hard to develop the MCX SURG System to specifically meet and exceed the DoD requirements. I am extremely proud that our hard work paid off, and endured the stringent and demanding military testing requirements, to ultimately gain the confidence of DoD to support their operations in the field.” Read more
