The watered-down gun control bill introduced by Senator Feinstein now comes down to “universal background checks.”
Senator Reid puts the strategy this way: “I want to be clear: in order to be effective, any bill that passes the Senate must include background checks.”
But the Department of Justice indicates Reid’s strategy is flawed unless total gun registration is put into place. In a white paper dated January 4 and obtained by NRA-ILA, the deputy director of the National Institute for Justice–DOJ’s research and evaluation agency–said that the proposals before Congress are unlikely to have an effect unless they are made even more draconian. For instance, the document makes clear that the effectiveness of “universal” background checks “depends on … requiring gun registration.”
Any wonder why there’s so much opposition to seemingly good legislation?
The president of the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association testified at the United Nations Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty negotiations on March 22, stressing that there exists no justification for the inclusion of antique firearms and their replicas within the scope of the ATT. Read more
