Team Barrett’s Justin Wolf Takes 2nd at King of 2 Miles with New Barrett Rifle

Barrett Firearms announces Justin Wolf and spotter James Archer’s 2nd place finish at the global 2023 King of 2 Miles competition, held at the NRA Whittington Center on September 22-24, 2023. What makes this result even more impressive is that Wolf was 1 of only 3 competitors who successfully engaged all 7 targets, the farthest being 3526 yards in the finals with a new Barrett rifle chambered in .416 Barrett using 500 grain Cutting Edge Lazer Bullets.

The three-day event attracts the world’s best marksmen and is regarded as the ultimate proving ground for long-range shooting, pushing the boundaries of precision and equipment performance. Of 69 competitors, Barrett represented 11% of rifles competing in the extreme long range event yet reflected 21% of the global Top 14 finalists. Barrett’s competing rifle system was the only factory configured product represented in this year’s competition that typically showcases custom-built rifles.

Wolf said the results were a testament to the new Barrett rifle’s exceptional precision and the promise it holds for the future of long-range shooting. “It’s always amazing to shoot big ELR events like this. The feeling of accomplishment of making the finals and having this success with the new Barrett equipment is second to none.”

Bryan James, President of Barrett Firearms, said: “Justin’s performance with our rifle at the King of 2 Miles competition is a source of immense pride for Barrett. It is a testament to our unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in long-range shooting. We look forward to officially unveiling this innovation to the world at the 2024 SHOT Show and bringing the same capability to the hands of marksmen who demand nothing but the best.”

Barrett Firearms invites media, industry professionals, and shooting enthusiasts to visit their booth #10344 or Industry Day at the Range during the 2024 SHOT Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, from January 23–26, 2024, where they can experience the new product firsthand and learn more about this revolutionary rifle’s specifications and capabilities. California Passes Gun & Ammunition Tax

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a law imposing an excise tax on guns and ammunition sold in California. Effective next July, the state will add an eleven percent tax on retail sales of “guns, gun parts and ammunition.” The money is earmarked for “gun violence prevention, enhanced school safety programs and victims of gun violence.”

State law-enforcement agencies and current or former officers are exempted.

The state already charges a $37.19 fee for each firearm sale. Newsom also signed two other measures. One revises the state’s concealed-carry laws and details dozens of places where concealed carry will not be permitted, including schools and medical facilities. The third will require that semiautomatic guns sold in the state be equipped with micro stamping technology on cartridges beginning in 2028.

Italian Firearms Group and Pedersoli Bring the “Droptine” to U. S. Hunters

AMARILLO, TEXAS: Combining cutting-edge technology and modern styling with Old World craftsmanship, the Italian firearms Group (IFG) and Davide Pedersoli and Co. proudly introduce the Model 86/71 Lever Action Droptine. From the big-North woods to the brush country of South Texas, the Droptine delivers a modern twist to this classic, dependable and time-honored platform.

Imported exclusively by IFG, the 86/71 Droptine offers hunters a svelte lever action chambered in the workhorse 30-30 Win., and is Pedersoli’s newest addition to the popular Boar Buster line of levers.

The heart of the 86/71 Droptine is a solid steel CNC machined receiver, matched with CNC machined lever. The 21-inch broach rifled barrel is premium match grade quality and is threaded at the muzzle for a suppressor.

After much research and development, Pedersoli engineers created an oversized lever that is both ergonomic and large enough to use while wearing gloves. The rifle’s five-round, tubular magazine loads easily from the right side, while empty brass ejects effortlessly through the top of the receiver.

The 86/71 Droptine comes standard with a fiber optic front sight and a dovetail rear sight, the latter integrated into a Picatinny rail mounted forward of the receiver. This mounting solution is perfect for red-dots or Scout-style rifle scopes that provide fast, precise shot placement. Read more

The Genius of the Modular AR 15

By Raul Mas

The Modern Sporting Rifle (MSR), most of which are based on the AR-15 design, has become the most popular long gun in America today.  A recent report <https://www.nssf.org/articles/commonly-owned-nssf-announces-over-24-million-msrs-in-circulation/?hilite=MSRS> from the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) suggests that almost 25 million of these firearms have been produced or imported into the United States since 1990.

Despite media efforts to brand them as “assault rifles” and “weapons of war”, most gun owners know that the MSR is simply today’s version of semi-automatic rifle technology dating back to the turn of the 20th century and Remington’s introduction of the Autoloading Repeating Rifle.  First introduced in 1906, the gun was later renamed the Model 8 <https://www.americanrifleman.org/content/the-remington-model-8-a-look-back/> in 1911 and it became a commercial success; despite stiff competition from popular lever action designs that had “won the West” and the Winchester Model 54 bolt action rifle introduced in 1924.  Semi-autos became increasingly popular after World War II as surplus M-1 Garand rifles and M-1 carbines began making their way onto target ranges and hunting fields.  By 1964, the Colt AR-15 rifle also made its commercial debut:

The civilian semi-auto AR-15 made its commercial debut in 1964. Here’s an early Colt advertisement.
One main reason for the popularity of the AR-15 is its modular design.  They are easy to take apart, customize or even build from scratch using component parts. As a result, an enormous aftermarket of AR-15 parts including barrels, fire control parts, bolt carriers, upper receivers, buffers, and other parts are now readily available to build on a lower receiver purchased through a federal firearms licensed dealer.

While the internet is full of AR-15 videos and information, a lot of it is missing the detailed knowledge necessary to properly inspect, measure, gauge and assemble your parts into a safe and reliable rifle.  By safe and reliable, I mean one that is chambered and headspaced correctly, where the gas system is neither overgassed or undergassed, where the parts are torqued to the correct specifications using the proper tools and torque values, and with the appropriate lubricants or sealants.  In addition, the rifle must feed factory ammo correctly with G.I. issued M4 magazines or quality commercial magazines.  Finally, the receiver extension components should produce reliable cycling, including the appropriately timed extraction and ejection of the spent cartridge cases.
