Guerrero joined the fighting forces of Morelos to battle against Spain early in the war for independence. During his presidency, Guerrero famously abolished slavery in Mexico. The son of a Spanish loyalist, Guerrero was asked for his sword to be presented to the viceroy of New Spain as a sign of goodwill. In response, Guerrero refused saying “LA PATRIA ES PRIMERO” (translated, The Homeland Comes First).
