U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit Makes Huge Impact on Florida Coaches

The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) has a storied history of producing the world’s greatest shooting-champion athletes. What is sometimes overlooked is their tremendous ability to train coaches and mentor youth shooting programs. The expertise and experience of the USAMU’s members was showcased at Mariner High School in Cape Coral, Fla., for the first ever Florida air rifle coaching clinic, where 26 coaches and over 20 high performing JROTC cadet athletes participated.

When Mariner High School coach Marybeth Williams approached the USAMU’s Sgt. 1st Class George Norton at the USAMU-hosted Youth Air Rifle 3-P Championship at Fort Benning, Ga., her initial goal was to connect a couple of her top athletes as perspective USAMU soldiers. However, after picking Norton’s brain for coaching advice, she had an epiphany!

“My husband and I have been working hard in our first four years of coaching to build a network of mentors. It occurred to me what an enormous opportunity it would be to have the talent of the (US)AMU help us with a ‘train the trainer’ type event,” Coach Williams explained.

She and her husband Maj. Bryan Williams (Mariner High School Army JROTC Senior Army instructor and marksmanship coach) quickly established a relationship with Norton and collaborated on a coaching clinic concept. Read more

BDE Suppressors by PWS Tested by PEW Science

PEW Science, a trusted independent private testing laboratory, recently ran a series of tests on the PWS BDE 762 Suppressor with excellent results.

Boise, Id.– PWS is proud to showcase the results of the recent testing completed by PEW Science on the BDE (Bravo Delta Echo) 762 Suppressor. The renowned PEW Science laboratory provides the public firearm community with meaningful, comprehensive, unbiased sound signature testing and analysis for suppressed weapon systems. Their many decades of experience in this field have culminated into the “Silencer Sound Standard”, which is the “most accurate, comprehensive, and meaningful small arms sound signature rating certification available.” After a comprehensive review of the BDE 762 Suppressor on the Savage Model 10 PC .308, PEW Science gave the BDE a stellar 48.7 PEW Science Suppression Rating.

This great rating system that PEW Science has developed showcases the suppressor’s sound suppression in conjunction with the volume of fire, from self-defense and limited hunting engagement all the way up to an extremely high volume of fire. The rating shows that the BDE 762 provided high suppression performance on a tactical or hunting rifle, significantly reducing the hearing damage risk to the operator. Further results from the testing showed that the BDE 762 also offers high performance in both long and short configurations, delivering moderate back pressure in the long configuration and low back pressure in the short configuration. NSSF-Adjusted NICS Background Checks for August 2023

The August 2023 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 1,117,824 is a decrease of 13.1 percent compared to the August 2022 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 1,286,816. For comparison, the unadjusted August 2023 FBI NICS figure 2,047,515 reflects a -16.4% percent decrease from the unadjusted FBI NICS figure of 2,450,616 in August 2022. August 2023 marks the 49th month in a row that has exceeded 1 million adjusted background checks in a single month.

Please note: Twenty-four states currently have at least one qualified alternative permit, which under the Brady Act allows the permit-holder, who has undergone a background check to obtain the permit, to purchase a firearm from a licensed dealer without a separate additional background check for that transfer. The number of NICS checks in these states does not include these legal transfers based on qualifying permits and NSSF does not adjust for these transfers. Read more
