DNR, MDARD update Michigan’s plan for managing chronic wasting disease

GW: The revisions in the newly modified CWD response plan are focused more on affected areas, rather than the broad, far-reaching actions in the previous plan – no doubt resulting from hunter outrage. But, now, if neighboring states are found with CWD, Michigan’s plan may swing into action.

The Natural Resources Commission adopted changes to chronic wasting disease baiting and feeding regulations, as outlined in the state’s newly revised CWD response plan, at its regular monthly meeting Thursday in Lansing. Read more

QDMA’s Rack Pack Website Goes Live!

BOGART, Ga. — The Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) is pleased to announced that the website for its youth education and outreach program, the Rack Pack, is now live atwww.rackpack.qdma.com.

QDMA will officially launch the Rack Pack at its 12th annual National Convention in Nashville, Tenn., August 9-11. The QDMA National Convention will be held in conjunction with the Bass Pro Shops Land & Wildlife Expo at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center.

The goal of the Rack Pack website is to promote interaction and engagement with QDMA and youth from around North America. The Rack Packprogram strives to recruit individuals 17 years of age and under and to provide them learning opportunities to enrich their hunting and outdoor experience. Read more

QDMA Urges Hunters in Seven States to Oppose Deer-Breeding Legislation

BOGART, Ga. – The Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) is urging hunters in seven states to oppose the expansion of the deer-breeding industry, which QDMA perceives as a growing threat to wild deer and the deer-hunting heritage. Legislation designed to loosen or dismantle regulatory barriers to white-tailed deer breeding and farming is being considered in Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia. MDNR Deer Harvest Reports from the Southern Lower Peninsula (2007-2010) which indicated that …
64% of the antlered deer harvested was comprised of 1.5 year old bucks
75% of all 1.5 year old bucks killed , had 6 or fewer total points (avg. 3/side)
40% of all 1.5 year old bucks killed, had 4 or less total points (avg. 2/side)

I still support only one deer kill per hunter per year with antler point restrictions until such a time as the herd becomes “balanced.”

Massachusetts Trooper Shoots Woman Instead of Her Dog

A Massachusetts state trooper shot a 66-year-old woman who was walking her dogs when he mistook her pets for a deer.

The trooper indicated that he had mistaken her dogs’ tails for those of deer. It’s sure time for a hunter’s safety refresher and an eye exam. More here…

Deer with Swollen Snout to be Studied

Cass County, Michigan

A deer with a swollen snout may provide information about what is causing the strange malady among whitetail deer in Michigan and other states.

Dale Wallace of Cass County is sending the head of a deer he shot last week to scientists in Georgia who are studying similar animals found in Eastern states and as far away as Idaho.
