First NRA Outdoors Long-Range Shooting School Receives High Grades From Students
TULSA, OK – The recently completed NRA Outdoors Long Range Hunting/Shooting School helped 10 NRA members extend their effective shooting distances, enhancing the students’ chance at success on their next western big-game hunt. The school, in its inaugural session, combined classroom instruction with range time and real-world scenarios, improving students’ accuracy and understanding of the variables that come into play when shooting at long ranges.
Under the guidance of instructors Iain Harrison, a former British Army officer and winner of the History Channel program “Top Shot,” as well as successful big-game guide and accomplished long-range shooter Justin Richins, the class culminated with students taking to areas of the ranch where long-range shots are often necessary for trophy elk and mule deer. Utilizing out-of-the-box Weatherby Vanguard rifles chambered in .308 topped with Swarovski Z6 riflescopes and firing factory-loaded Federal Premium Vital-Shok ammunition, each student successfully completed a course of fire that included shots across wind-swept canyons and other varied terrain at steel targets up to 1,016 yards away.
“I enjoy being around likeminded NRA members,” said attendee Ray Shulund, of Spokane, Wash. “I definitely improved my confidence in long-range shooting and hunting skills. The experience was one to be put in the books.”
In response to the success of the first NRA Outdoors Long Range Hunting/Shooting School and the requests for additional classes, the school will return to the Queen Mountain Ranch for a second school May 22-25, 2014. Students will arrive on May 22; attend class May 23-24 and departing on the 25th. NRA Outdoors is now taking reservations for this class, which will be limited to 12 students. Cost of the class, which includes meals and accommodations, is $2,000.
“The success of the first NRA Outdoors Long Range Hunting/Shooting School was a result of the combination of our excellent instructors; our partners Weatherby, Swarovski and Federal Premium Ammunition, as well as the first-class facilities at the Queen Mountain Ranch that made this class unlike anything else in the industry and a must for any serious western big-game hunter and shooter,” said NRA Outdoors President Greg Ray. “We’re excited to bring this class back to the same location next year and to give more NRA members the chance to learn from some of the best.”
