May 2023 – Firearm & Ammunition Imports
NSSF® tracks and reports monthly U.S. import units for several sporting arms, ammunition, and optics categories from the US International Trade Commission. Below are the results for May 2023 compared to May 2022.
- May Handgun imports decreased 11.3 percent from 404,376 to 358,522 units. Within the handgun category, Pistol import units dropped 14.9 percent from 375,789 to 319,629 units while imported Revolver units increased 36.1 percent from 28,587 to 38,893 units.
- May Rifle imports were down 3.7 percent from 110,945 to 106,869 units. This category has been adjusted to exclude HTS codes 9303.30.4010 & 9303.30.8005 (Telescopic Sights Imported with Rifles).
- May Shotgun category posted a 4.8 percent decrease in imported units from 109,055 to 103,815.
- May Muzzleloader category increased 34.0 percent from 15,144 to 20,288 units.
- May Other Cartridges (excluding Shotgun cartridges) category increased 23.5 percent from 228.3 million to 281.9 million units.
- May Shotgun Cartridges category increased by 25.7 percent rising to 53.2 million units as compared to last year’s 42.3 million.
- Telescopic Sights:
- May Telescopic sights with rifles (HTS codes 9303.30.4010 and HTS 9303.30.8005, defined as telescopic sights or other optical devices suitable for use with arms, if mounted on a firearm or entered with the firearm on which they are designed to be mounted) decreased 0.1 percent from 2,726 units to 2,722.
- May Telescopic sights for rifles (HTS code 9013.10.1000, defined as telescopic sights for rifles not designed for use with infrared light) decreased 61.2 percent from 382,012 units to 148,400.
- May Telescopic sights for rifles (HTS code 9013.10.3000, defined as telescopic sights for rifles not elsewhere specified or included [NESOI]) rose 60.7 percent from 59,502 units to 95,610.
- Binoculars:
- May Prism Binoculars [not for use with infrared light] (HTS code 9005.10.0040) decreased 38.6 percent from 296,433 units to 181,983.
- May Binoculars HTS code 9005.10.0080 [Other Binoculars, NESOI] increased 10.5 percent from 116,464 units to 128,740.
- May Hunting Knives (with fixed blades and wood handles) category dropped 50.4 percent from 56,916 units to 28,225 units.
