Local Input on State Forests Appreciated

The Department of Natural Resources is reminding interested residents and organizations that there’s still time to provide feedback on its draft Regional State Forest Management Plans (RSFMPs). The draft plans and other helpful information are available on the DNR website, www.michigan.gov/regionalforestplans. Comments may be submitted through Jan. 2, 2013.

These drafts – which cover the eastern Upper Peninsula, the western Upper Peninsula and the northern Lower Peninsula – were developed from an inclusive planning effort and input from a diverse group of stakeholders representing government organizations, outdoor recreation, the forest industry, conservation agencies and everyday citizens. Once finalized, the plans will provide long-term direction for resource managers that will guide DNR management decisions on state forest lands.

Public feedback is crucial to the success of the plans.

Residents and organizations are encouraged to review the drafts – especially the sections most relevant to their own interests and experience – and give their feedback. Useful feedback from the people who use and are invested in our forests will help move us toward a better, more comprehensive approach to managing Michigan’s state forest lands.
