Sierra Bullets, True Velocity Produce Competition-Grade Composite-Cased Ammunition

SEDALIA, Mo. – Sierra® Bullets and True VelocityTM introduce the first-ever competition-grade line of composite-cased ammunition. Capable of sub-MOA accuracy at extended ranges and single-digit standard deviation in muzzle velocity, this ammunition provides a level of performance and precision unsurpassed by brass-cased match-grade cartridges.

True Velocity has spent many years developing and perfecting reduced-weight, composite-cased ammunition for the US Military. This effort has resulted in a new, state-of-the-art manufacturing process capable of tolerances and in-process checks and measures unheard of even with the best brass cased ammunition available today.

Starting at the base, the True Velocity case features a precision formed primer pocket and burr-free flash hole in a steel alloy head, that offers increased strength and safety over conventional brass head case designs.

Inherent to the new manufacturing process, the composite neck and body of the True Velocity case offer exceptional wall thickness uniformity and results in precisely aligned features with minimal runout – results that handloaders try and achieve via fire forming and tedious outside neck turning operations when working with conventional brass cases.

Unlike brass case designs, True Velocity can control the internal geometry of the composite case independent of the external geometry and can fine tune the powder chamber to optimize the internal ballistics performance. Due to the efficiency of the burn, composite-cased ammunition typically requires 10% less propellant for the same muzzle velocity, which helps reduce barrel wear and heating, and reduces felt recoil and muzzle flash.

Sierra has over 70 years of experience producing the finest, most accurate, match bullets, where in addition to an extensive list of Q/C inspections, the accuracy capability of every lot of MatckKing® and Tipped MatchKing® bullets is verified in Sierra’s 300-meter underground test range prior to release.

Sierra® and True Velocity have selected the most uniform primers and propellants available for these new loads, and thoroughly tested these combinations in a broad range of conditions and rifles to ensure uniform, consistent performance.

When the True Velocity composite case is topped off with a precisely aligned and seated Sierra MatchKing or Tipped MatchKing bullet, modern adhesives are used to control the bond between the bullet and the neck, resulting in exceptional neck tension uniformity. Unlike brass cases, there are no mouth burrs, or excessive variation in neck thickness or annealing that will affect bullet release force in the composite-cased ammunition.

The end result is competition-grade ammunition with unparalleled accuracy and velocity uniformity, right out of the box!

Look for this new Sierra/True Velocity ammunition on store shelves in 2020 in .308 Winchester with Sierra’s 168- and 175-grain MatckKing and Tipped MatchKing bullets, and in 6.5mm Creedmoor with a 142-grain MatchKing bullet. Additional offerings will follow.

Federal’s New Punch Personal Defense Ammo

ANOKA, Minnesota – – Federal Ammunition has been a leading producer of law enforcement ammunition for more than thirty years. Drawing on that knowledge, the company recently set out to design a new self-defense load that would provide excellent overall performance from popular carry guns. The result of this effort is one of the most exciting new line of defensive loads to hit the market in years—Federal’s new Punch ammo.

Punch provides a great option for common self-defense scenario use—where performance through more complex duty barriers, like those in the FBI protocol test, are less likely to be a factor.

“Many personal defenders think, ‘If it works for law enforcement then it’s good for me.’ That is a great guideline and still our ultimate recommendation,” said Laack. “But that may add features not required for everyday carry for everyone.”

Federal saw a need for a reliable, accurate, terminally effective option that doesn’t have to be the top scoring product in duty ammunition test procedures.

“Concealed-carry permit holders, especially new shooters, need an uncomplicated answer to the question ‘What ammo do I need for self-defense’,” said Federal Handgun Ammunition Product Manager Chris Laack. “Things to consider such as function, reliable ignition, barrier performance, terminal performance, ballistics and other considerations are a lot to digest for most people. What some consumers really need to know is it will function in their gun, every time, and that it will be effective stopping a threat as quickly as possible. Punch is our easy answer for them.”

Most concealed carry permit holders are less concerned with factors such as barrier penetration through steel, plywood and auto glass and more concerned about choosing a bullet that is engineered from the ground-up to stop an attacker and work effectively in their chosen firearm. And, as the data shows, Punch bullets perform well in the tests that matter most to the average shooter—penetration and expansion through bare gel and heavy clothing. Federal has made Punch ammunition a natural choice for concealed carry.

What’s more, Punch ammunition features Federal’s smooth-feeding nickel-plated cases, advanced powders, and the sealed reliability of high-quality, sensitive primers. With Punch, self-defenders can be assured its components will do its job when it matters most.

The five new Punch options include a .380 Auto 85-grain offering with a muzzle velocity of 1,000 feet per second, a .38 Special +P 120-grain load at 1,070 fps, a 9mm 147-grain load at 1,150 fps, a .40 S&W 16-grain load at 1,130 fps, and a .45 Auto 230-grain load at 890 fps. What’s more, all these loads will be available immediately, and with MSRPs from $15.95 to $20.95 per box of 20. Read more

Federal Hydra-Shok Deep 380 Auto

ANOKA, Minnesota – – The newest addition to Federal’s Hydra-Shok Deep lineup is the industry’s first expanding 380 Auto to consistently meet FBI protocol recommendations for penetration (12 inches minimum) through bare gel and through heavy clothing.

In the past three years, Federal Premium’s new Hydra-Shok Deep ammunition product line has been greatly recognized by its customers—and the industry—for its improved penetration and superior reliability. This has been most recently proven by it winning a 2019 NRA Golden Bullseye Award for “Ammo of the Year” by Shooting Illustrated magazine. Read more

Federal Terminal Ascent All-Range Hunting Ammunition

ANOKA, Minnesota – – Federal, the world’s largest sporting ammunition manufacturer is introducing its all-new Terminal Ascent—the best hunting bullet ever built within the 98-year history of the company.

“The new Terminal Ascent blends the features of top match-style bullet designs with the industry’s best bonding technology and components to deliver any-range accuracy and reliable expansion even at low velocities,” said Federal Centerfire and Handgun Ammunition Product Director Mike Holm. “This outstanding bullet design provides high weight retention, deep penetration and lethal terminal performance, both up close and at extreme distances.”

Terminal Ascent features several key elements that make up its superior overall design.

First is the solid-shanked and bonded bullet construction. A bonded bullet has a lead core bonded to the copper jacket around that core. Its solid copper shank and bonded lead core retain weight for deep penetration and energy dump, delivering extremely effective wound channels and terminal performance, even at velocities as low as 1,400 fps—speeds typically seen 1,200 yards downrange in the 200-grain 30-caliber loads.

Second is the AccuChannel grooving. Read more
