U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Proposes to Delist Gray Wolf Population Nationwide

Washington, DC –  June 7, 2013, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) formally announced its proposal to remove the gray wolf from the endangered species list throughout the lower 48 states (with the exception of the Mexican wolf population). The FWS’s monumental decision recognizes the gray wolf’s recovery resulting from state wildlife management and the participation of the hunting community.  This achievement in conservation demonstrates the impact of successful science based efforts across the country.  Read more

Tell Your Senator: Support Conservation Funding!

Hunters, anglers and trappers are the original conservationists. We fund Michigan’s conservation efforts through license fees and excise taxes on sporting equipment. Governor Snyder’s proposed license package would simplify the license system and raise over $18 million per year for the habitat and enforcement work that supports our outdoor activities.
As part of the Governor’s license package, the DNR released a list of outcomes from increasing hunting and fishing license revenue, with the bulk going toward additional fish and wildlife habitat work, fish stocking, and more conservation officers. They’re asking for a strategic investment in our state’s fish and wildlife by hunters,anglers and trappers and they’re being open and transparent with how they’ll invest it.
We have an opportunity to maintain, improve and provide more great opportunities to hunt, fish and trap. The bill containing the license structure changes passed the House of Representatives yesterday by an overwhelming bipartisan 77-32 vote. The bill now goes to the Senate. Read more

SCI’s Arguments Win Minnesota Wolf Case

GW:  …the Court found that the groups merely disagreed with the legislature’s policy of allowing wolf harvests…And, that’s what happens when you come to conclusions based on feelings.

Washington, D.C. – Based on arguments presented by Safari Club International (SCI) the Minnesota Court of Appeals has dismissed a legal challenge to Minnesota’s wolf harvest. The Court ruled that the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) and Howling for Wolves failed to show their members were harmed by the process used by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to establish the state’s wolf season. Questions Emerge Over HSUS and the IRS Scandal

The ongoing IRS scandal that is hitting Washington has yet another twist with new questions surrounding the number one group on our Dirty Dozen List, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).  The latest twist comes after the person at the heart of the IRS scandal, Lois Lerner, was found to have ties to this anti-hunting organization.

Lerner is the Director of the IRS’s tax-exempt organizations division, which has come under investigation for improperly targeting conservative groups.  Lerner’s involvement might not stop there, however.  Now questions are being raised as to whether the IRS ignored accusations regarding HSUS’s tax exempt status because of Lerner’s active membership with HSUS. U.S. District Court Dismisses Lawsuit to Ban Traditional Ammunition

DNR confirms another dog kill in Atlantic Mine area

GW:  So go ahead and sign your meaningless petition.  Hunters can minimize such occurrences as this attack and will pay for the privilege.  If the anti-hunters want alternative controls, let them pay for it with their deceit-derived stash.

A Department of Natural Resources wildlife technician has confirmed that a third dog has been killed today by a wolf in the Atlantic Mine area (Houghton County), in the same location where another dog was killed last week. The dog in this morning’s attack was chained up in a fenced yard at the time of the attack. Read more

Congressman Renews Push for IRS Investigation of HSUS

CongressLetterheadIn April 2010, Congressman Blaine Leutkemeyer of Missouri wrote Lois G. Lerner, director of the IRS’s tax-exempt organizations division, to inform her that the Humane Society of the United States—unaffiliated with local humane societies—may have been engaging in excessive attempts to influence public policy in violation of the rules for nonprofits.

Over the past week in the growing IRS scandal, Lerner has emerged as an IRS official who reportedly had knowledge that the agency was politically targeting groups in 2010, and at least one Congressman has accused her of lying to him. And yesterday, it emerged that Lerner is an “active member” of HSUS—or at least was around the time of Rep. Leutkemeyer’s letter, according to her biography in advance of an Oct. 2010 speech. Is Giving to HSUS an Efficient Use of Money?

Donors want their dollars used effectively. There’s only so much money that each person has budgeted for charity. So is the Humane Society of the United States deserving of animal lovers’ donations? We certainly don’t think so.

For starters, the American Institute of Philanthropy gives HSUS a “D” grade for high spending on fundraising and overhead and low spending on programs. This is similar to a finding from the animal rights newspaper Animal People.

Safari Club International Thanks Governor Snyder For Protecting Hunting, Fishing Rights in Michigan

Washington, DC – Governor Rick Snyder (Mich.) signed Senate Bills 288 and 289 into law today at a ceremony attended by many Safari Club International members. The new laws 1) state that the Natural Resources Commission has the authority to designate game species and 2) protect the right to hunt and fish. SCI’s Michigan Chapters, along with other sporting organizations in Michigan, advocated for final passage of both of these bills during this legislative session. Read more
