Boone and Crockett Club Applauds Wolf Delisting, Management in Wyoming

 MISSOULA, Mont. (Sept. 4, 2012)?The Boone and Crockett Club applauds the Aug. 31, 2012, decision of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) for returning management authority for the gray wolf to the State of Wyoming.


This decision is consistent with the Endangered Species Act of 1973 and the 1980 and 1987 Northern Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery Plans. This delisting of the Wyoming wolf population from the lists of threatened and endangered species completes a decades-long project to restore the wolf to the Rocky Mountains that began in 1973. A large and growing wolf population now ranges in North America from the Rockies and the Great Lakes area north through Canada and Alaska.

Zero Tolerance = Zero Brains in Nebraska Schools

We have found our next mass-murder threat:  A 3 1/2 year-old boy from Nebraska.  His name is Hunter and he is deaf, so he uses sign language  and signs his name by crossing his forefinger and index finger and moving his hand up and down.  That’s enough for school officials, who want him to change his name.  The threatening youngster’s dilemma is here…

Sample results found Asian carp eDNA in Sandusky Bay

On July 30-31, Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers collected 150 water samples from the Sandusky Bay and Sandusky River. Analysis of these water samples indicated 20 samples out of 150 taken from throughout Sandusky Bay and Sandusky River have tested positive for the presence of silver carp environmental DNA (eDNA). New Growth in Hunting, Fishing Participation

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. — When the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) recently reported the number of hunters grew by nine percent since 2006 and the number of anglers grew by 11 percent in that same time frame, sportsmen and the sporting industry were thrilled. The numbers, which are preliminary results released as the initial look into the USFWS’s 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation, reversed what had been dropping participation levels in fishing over the past 10 years and indicated the first jump in hunter numbers in more than two decades. HSUS Falls Flat in the Hoosier State

So, sad.  HSUS can’t sell animal rights to Indiana farmers…

The Humane Society of the United States was at the Indiana State Fair pushing a federal egg mandate that’s before Congress. That’s a tough task for a group that’s on the record as wanting to get rid of animal agriculture. Apparently HSUS and its six-figure CEO Wayne Pacelle tried to hold some kind of press event to gin up support for the bill they’re pushing. We say “tried” because Pacelle didn’t appear to draw much of a crowd (see below).

A little birdie emailed us the details:

Apparently, when Pacelle took to the microphone, the TV cameraman started panning the audience (or lack thereof) and packed up and left in the middle of his presentation. Must have been tough since all of the old tractors that are right there in Pioneer Village simultaneously (and completely coincidentally ;-)) were cranked up just as Pacelle took the microphone . . .

Michigan Bill to Authorize Wolf Hunting

August 15, 2012, Introduced by Rep. Huuki and referred to the Committee on Natural Resources, Tourism, and Outdoor Recreation…

(b) The sound scientific management of gray wolf populations in this state is necessary, including the use of hunting as a management tool, to minimize human and gray wolf encounters and to prevent gray wolves from threatening or harming humans, livestock,and pets.

(2) The legislature hereby authorizes the establishment of the first open season for gray wolf. The commission may issue orders under section 40113a establishing annual gray wolf hunting seasons throughout the state.

DNR seeks volunteers for summer stewardship in southeastern Michigan

State recreation officials recently announced the schedule of volunteer stewardship workdays taking place in September in Southeast Michigan state parks and recreation areas. For example, volunteers are needed to cut and pile invasive shrubs and plant native prairie plants at Sterling State Park in Monroe County. These activities at Sterling – as well as in other state parks and recreation areas throughout the region – will help protect and restore unique natural areas. Read more
