Angler catches state record black buffalo in Allegan County
The Department of Natural Resources confirmed the catch of a new state-record black buffalo on Thursday, Sept. 6.
Record Black Buffalo
The fish, a member of the sucker family, was caught by Bryan DeGoede of Kalamazoo, Mich., on Wednesday, Sept. 5, on the Kalamazoo River in Allegan County at 11:50 p.m. The fish weighed 37.4 pounds and measured 39.3 inches. DeGoede was bowfishing when he landed the record fish.
The record was verified by Jay Wesley, a DNR fisheries manager for Southwest Michigan. Read more
DNR Seeks Public Input on Long-Range Plans for Pinckney and Waterloo Recreation Areas
The Department of Natural Resources will host an open house on Tuesday, Oct. 2, to gather public input on the proposed Phase 2 Long Range Action Goal Plans for Pinckney Recreation Area (in Livingston and Washtenaw counties) and Waterloo Recreation Area (in Jackson and Washtenaw counties). The open house is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Gerald Eddy Discovery Center, 17030 Bush Road in Chelsea, Mich. Read more

Michigan DNR’s Recreation 101 Program earns national award

Boone and Crockett Club Applauds Wolf Delisting, Management in Wyoming
MISSOULA, Mont. (Sept. 4, 2012)?The Boone and Crockett Club applauds the Aug. 31, 2012, decision of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) for returning management authority for the gray wolf to the State of Wyoming.
This decision is consistent with the Endangered Species Act of 1973 and the 1980 and 1987 Northern Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery Plans. This delisting of the Wyoming wolf population from the lists of threatened and endangered species completes a decades-long project to restore the wolf to the Rocky Mountains that began in 1973. A large and growing wolf population now ranges in North America from the Rockies and the Great Lakes area north through Canada and Alaska.

Sample results found Asian carp eDNA in Sandusky Bay
On July 30-31, Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers collected 150 water samples from the Sandusky Bay and Sandusky River. Analysis of these water samples indicated 20 samples out of 150 taken from throughout Sandusky Bay and Sandusky River have tested positive for the presence of silver carp environmental DNA (eDNA).
