NRA Responds to Attacks on “Stand Your Ground” Laws

GW:  We hear the rumblings from the uninformed and leaders like Eric Holder and Al Sharpton about the “stand-your-ground laws” and how dangerous they are.  But, in Michigan, for example, we had a “duty-to-retreat” law in place before stand your ground was enacted.  This meant that in your own home, if confronted by a bad guy, a homeowner was legally responsible to run and hide, rather than defend himself.  If you want to talk about “senseless” and “dangerous conflict”, we should have started the conversation about this concept.  And, we, and other states, did so already.

A few days after a jury acquitted George Zimmerman in the death of Trayvon Martin, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder was busy exploiting the trial outcome by attacking “stand?your?ground” self-defense laws.  As reported by Fox News, during a speech at the NAACP’s annual convention, Holder said, “Separate and apart from the case that has drawn the nation’s attention, it’s time to question laws that senselessly expand the concept of self-defense and sow dangerous conflict in our neighborhoods.”

In response to Holder’s remarks, NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox had this to say:  “The attorney general fails to understand that self-defense is not a concept, it’s a fundamental human right.  To send a message that legitimate self-defense is to blame is unconscionable, and demonstrates once again that this administration will exploit tragedies to push their political agenda.” Read more

Safari Club International Encourages Senate Action on the Sportsmen’s Act of 2013

Crosman Hosts USA’s Largest Field Target Match

ROCHESTER, New York – The 2013 Northeast Regional Field Target Championship (NRFTC), hosted by Crosman Corporation, concluded with international teams from Venezuela and Canada competing alongside Team USA. Demonstration Days at DNR shooting ranges give young hunters the chance to try firearms, archery equipment

The Department of Natural Resources offers Demonstration Days for mentored youth hunters at its Ortonville, Pontiac Lake, Rose Lake and Sharonville shooting ranges in August.

Mentored youth hunting regulations require that hunting devices are properly fitted and appropriately suited to the youth hunter. The Demonstration Days events will give young hunters a chance to try a variety of firearms – rifles, shotguns and muzzleloaders – archery equipment and crossbows with help from range officers and hunter education instructors; meet with conservation officers about what to expect while in the field; and try out the DNR’s hunting simulator. Participating partners also include the National Wild Turkey Federation with its JAKES trailer and Pheasants Forever. Read more

The Enemy Within

Upon taking office, the President and Senators-elect must swear or affirm that they will “support and defend the Constitution.”  

The oath is required by the Constitution; the wording is prescribed by law.  “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of (insert title here) of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”  The Founders declared that governments are created by people to secure their rights and they wanted to make sure our leaders agree before they get to work.

However, when Senate amendment 139 was proposed and voted on this past March 23rd, the Congressional record indicates some 46 U.S. Senators voted against it, with the purpose described in the amendment’s language this way:  “To uphold Second Amendment rights and prevent the United States from entering into the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty.”

And, yes, our Senators Levin and Stabenow were among 46 legislators – all Democrats with one “Independent” – against the measure to protect our rights guaranteed by the Constitution. Fortunately, for freedom-loving Americans, the amendment was supported by 53 members of the Senate and it passed.

Partisanship?  We’ve got it, alright!  Good thing, too. 

The U.N. Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), also strongly supported by President Obama and Secretary Kerry, includes“small arms and light weapons” among its terms, with no exception for firearms owned by law-abiding citizens. And the treaty’s text urges recordkeeping of gun buyers, asking importing countries to provide information including “end use or end user documentation” for a “minimum of 10 years.”

The draft states, “Each State Party shall establish and maintain a national control system to regulate the export of ammunition for conventional arms.” Article 12 of the treaty “encourages” signatory nations to compile “records” of all“end users” of firearms imported into their county — and to supply this sensitive personal information to the government of the exporting country.

So, if a citizen were to purchase a Russian shotgun, the treaty could force that information into the hands of foreigners.  It is gun registration by no other name.
