Mexican wolf scheduled for January release in Arizona

PHOENIX — An adult male Mexican wolf, designated M1133, may soon be exploring its new territory in the Apache National Forest of east-central Arizona. The Mexican Wolf Reintroduction Project’s interagency field team (IFT) recently received approval from Dr. Benjamin Tuggle, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (Service) Regional Director, in coordination with the Arizona Game and Fish Department, to conduct this initial (a wolf born and raised in captivity) release in mid-January adjacent to the Bluestem pack to replace the pack’s alpha male that was illegally killed last summer. Wolverines in Limbo

Wolverine trapping has ended in Montana and a fight ensues relative to its status in the future.  Eight environmental and conservation groups sued the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks to stop the trapping season and won the injunction before the 2012-13 wolverine trapping season was to commence.  Details follow here…

Bobcat Attack

A man, minding his own business, was blindsided by a crazed bobcat and was bitten in his face and back.  The cat’s ninth life was terminated on the scene.  Details here…

Killing the Killers

Last spring, while on a walk within a few hundred yards of my home, I came across a dreadful sight:  two tiny deer legs and feet.  The scant remnants of a new-born fawn were all that were left after a fresh coyote kill. Just because it’s nature’s way, doesn’t mean I have to like it.  And, I don’t.

The mental picture of a totally defenseless fawn being ripped to shreds while alive conjures up disdain for the indiscriminate killer(s).  Now is the time to even up the score. Read more

Spring turkey applications on sale now through Feb. 1

The Department of Natural Resources reminds hunters that spring turkey hunting applications are on sale now through Feb 1. The application fee is $4. Hunters may apply for one limited-quota hunting license, or purchase a license for spring turkey Hunt 234, which does not require the $4 application fee. Applications and licenses may be purchased at any authorized license agent or online at www.michigan.gov/huntdrawings. Read more

The Writing’s on the Wall for HSUS

Two developments have recently emerged that could be body-blows to the Humane Society of the United States and its deceptive practices of raising money from pet loving Americans who are deceived into giving to the group.

First, news broke this morning that the ASPCA has agreed to pay Feld Entertainment, owner of the Ringling Bros. Circus, nearly $10 million as part of a settlement in a federal racketeering lawsuit. Feld will continue its litigation against other defendants, including HSUS and two of its attorneys. HSUS could be on the hook for millions upon millions in damages. And for anyone who may have been thinking this lawsuit didn’t have merit, the fact that ASPCA was worried enough to shell out almost $10 million just to make it go away should make them think again. Better Deer Hunting? You Bet!

Congratulations are in order for Michigan’s deer hunters in the northwest Lower Peninsula for a vote to strengthen the declining, unbalanced whitetail deer herd.  By an overwhelming majority, deer hunters in the 12-county area, which includes Charlevoix, Emmet, Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Lake, Manistee, Missaukee, Mason, Osceola and Wexford counties, have approved antler-point restrictions (APR).  Next on the agenda is for the Natural Resources Commission to address the approval of the issue at its spring meeting.
