Niles man catches new state record catfish, breaks Michigan record set in 1943

The Department of Natural Resources recently confirmed the catch of a new state record flathead catfish.

Caught by Rodney Akey of Niles, Mich., on Tuesday, May 22, on the St. Joseph River in Berrien County at 8 p.m., the fish weighed 49.8 pounds and measured 45.7 inches. Akey was still-fishing from shore with an alewife when he landed the record fish. Read more

Schuette, Stokes announce felony charges against Arkansas Asian carp salesman

Investigation by DNR revealed illegal sales of live Asian carp from semi-truck in Midland…

Attorney General Bill Schuette and Michigan Department of Natural Resources Director Rodney Stokes today announced that the Attorney General’s Criminal Division has charged an Arkansas man with 12 felony counts of possessing and selling live Asian carp in violation of state law protecting against the spread of invasive species. The charges follow a joint investigation by the DNR’s Special Investigation Unit and Commercial Fish Enforcement Unit. Read more

DNR reports Duck Lake Fire at 63 percent containment

For the first time since the Duck Lake Fire started in the Upper Peninsula’s Luce County, the Department of Natural Resources has reported the fire area is more than 60 percent contained. More accurate GPS information has helped the department determine that fire area containment, as of this morning, stood at 63 percent. Read more

The Department of Natural Resources reminds Michigan residents to resist the instinct to try to “help” seemingly abandoned fawns, because this can be more harmful than helpful to the fawn. Sodsaver Legislation Advancing

Washington, D.C. – The push by Pheasants Forever and other conservation groups in support of “Sodsaver” – strengthened federal protections for native grasslands – received a boost yesterday with the introduction of a “Sodsaver” bill, the Protect our Prairies Act, in the U.S. House of Representatives by Kristi Noem (R-SD) and Tim Walz (D-MN). If enacted, the policy would help conserve native prairie habitats, most notably in the Dakotas, while saving nearly $200 million in federal spending. Read more
