Victim’s Mother Calls to Reinstate Failed Knife Ban

Yesterday’s Texas Tribune newspaper featured an article about Lori Brown, whose son Harrison was tragically murdered on the University of Texas campus last year by an individual who had previously been involuntarily committed to a mental institution, but who was inexplicably released. The murderer used a knife that at the time was prohibited from being carried. Now Brown is calling for the reinstatement of that same knife ban that didn’t prevent her son’s senseless murder.

There is no clearer repudiation of any knife ban than the fact that the knife used in the murder of Harrison Brown was illegal to carry at the time of his murder. That didn’t stop this severely deranged individual from committing murder. And, let’s not lose sight of the fact that murder is, itself, a capital offense. Criminals are never dissuaded from committing criminal acts by laws or weapons-free zones. Reinstating bans will not be any more effective at stopping some future violence using any knife, banned or not. Read more

Registration for Enhanced 2018 CMP National Matches

By Ashley Brugnone, CMP Writer

Registration for the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) 2018 National Trophy Pistol and Rifle Matches opened March 1, 2018. The annual event, held at the Camp Perry National Guard Training Base since 1907, has undergone significant changes for the July 2018 season – presenting new matches never before offered by the CMP and reclaiming traditional matches missing from the Camp Perry soil in recent years.

After months of development, the CMP has proudly brought smallbore back to the ranges of Camp Perry. Making a debut on the CMP’s smallbore schedule is a 3×40 with iron sights and an any sights match, a 3×20 team match and prone events. Scoring will be administered in collaboration with Shooters Technology, using a mobile application that will transmit target images via cell phone to the Orion scoring system and allows scores to be compiled before competitors even return from hanging targets down range.

A six-day CMP National Matches Junior Camp, Smallbore & Air Rifle, will also take place 17-22 July at Camp Perry. Camp is open to junior athletes who shoot both three-position smallbore and standing or international precision air rifle.  Participants must be between the ages of 12 to 20 and must currently be shooting in three-position smallbore competition matches and international air rifle.

Also new to the CMP schedule is a three-day series of long range events for teams and individuals. Long range matches will be fired at 1,000 yards and are open to match rifles, service rifles or Palma rifles.

Introduced at last year’s Nationals, the CMP will again host its own Cup Matches, which include a 4-man team event and a 2000 Point Aggregate event which will feature a cash prize based on the average 2-day score. The CMP will also continue to offer an assortment of bonus competitions for vintage and modern military rifles, sprinkled into the mix – each named to honor the memories of important figures in marksmanship history, as well as to commemorate the spirit of past and present National Matches. These matches include the Oliver Hazard Perry Match and the Roosevelt Commemorative Match. Read more

Your Rights Under Fire

Rather than address the root causes of mass shootings, fix access to mental health care, reform the National Instant Background Check System (NICS), and allow for improved school and workplace security, gun control activists prefer to blame legal gun owners. They have launched a massive and coordinated campaign to roll back our legal self defense rights.  And it’s working!

Support for stricter gun laws is now at its highest point since 2000, surpassing even the weeks after Sandy Hook in 2012. We have recently been told by Michigan legislators and legislative staff that contacts to their offices in support of new gun control laws exceed opposition to new laws by a 9:1 margin. While the current pro-gun majority State House & State Senate help moderate the threat, it has stopped forward progress on our 2017 initiatives including permitless carry, enhanced concealed pistol licenses to allow carry in PFZs with advanced training, preemption enforcement, and a provisional CPL for 18-20 year olds.
Among very real gun control threats at the state level in Michigan are:
-The creation of “extreme risk protection orders” that allow the confiscation of firearms without due process.
-Requiring purchase permits for all long gun sales including private party sales and the addition of rifles and shotguns to Michigan’s firearms registry.
-Raising the age to 21 to purchase long guns.
-The expansion of gun free zones and a total ban on campus carry.
-New requirements on the storage of firearms in one’s home.

-State bans on magazines exceeding 10 rounds and other features of modern sporting rifles such as the AR-15.

Your state legislators need to hear from you immediately to help counter the gun control agenda!
