Tomorrow, during the Colorado Parks & Wildlife’s Commission’s March meeting, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is expected to give a presentation aimed at undermining the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation and directly threatening Colorado’s hunting heritage.

By attempting to show that mountain lion hunting negatively impacts population numbers, community dynamics and conservation efforts and can actually increase human-lion interaction, HSUS will be contradicting state biologists’ data and will directly attack hunters in the process.

Biologists from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) show that conservative estimates indicate mountain lion harvest mortality rates fall somewhere between 10-12 percent annually, well within the state’s approved management plans. Their figures even show that the number of adult female lions harvested, 16 percent, is a direct indicator of a strong population with high reproductive potential, providing for stable population trajectory. Dick’s to Remove Firearms

Continuing to pursue the tightened gun policies that initially drove its stock down, Dick’s Sporting Goods (NYSE: DKS) has announced it will remove hunting gear from about 125 stores. The change, expected to begin August 1, will affect about 17 percent of the company’s stores. The announcement, coupled with continuing declines in same-store sales since 2017, is being credited with a nearly 11 percent decline in stock price yesterday. Dick’s closed at $34.45 on the NYSE, down $4.28/share.

Dick’s CEO and major shareholder Ed Stack has told the Wall Tree Journal that if the 125-store move “goes well” the company may remove hunting gear from more stores next year. Last month, Stack was one of four CEOs to sign a letter supporting a gun control bill recently passed in the U.S. House of Representatives. He has also joined the business council of Everytown, the nonprofit organization founded by Michael Bloomberg that advocates for gun control.

Michigan Issuing Supplemental Deer Feeding Permits in Southern UP Counties

Except within its chronic wasting disease surveillance areas, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has agreed to issue supplemental deer feeding permits in the southern part of the Upper Peninsula.

The action comes with average U.P. snow depths measured across the region nearly double that of a 15-year average for late February and March.

Feeding deer large quantities of food to supplement natural winter food resources – termed “supplemental feeding” – is allowed by permit in the northern U.P. counties beginning in January each year.

This type of feeding differs from “recreational feeding,” which is limited daily to 2 gallons of feed, placed within sight of a home or camp. Recreational feeding is allowed year-round across the U.P.

In southern U.P. counties – which typically exhibit milder winter weather conditions – free permits are issued for supplemental feeding dependent on weather conditions.

“The DNR uses total accumulated snow as an index of the severity of the winter,” said Terry Minzey, DNR U.P. regional wildlife supervisor. “In typical winters, impacts to the deer herd in the southern part of the region, based on snow accumulation measurements, can be forecasted by mid-January.” Read more

Coast Guard Rescues 46 Ice Fishers from Ice Floe in Western Lake Erie

CLEVELAND — The U.S. Coast Guard and local agencies rescued 46 ice fishermen from an ice floe that broke free near Catawaba Island, Saturday.

An additional estimated 100 people were able to self-rescue themselves from the ice floe either by swimming or walking on ice-bridges that were still connected to the floe initially.

At 8:13 a.m., Coast Guard Station Marblehead received notification from an Ohio Department of Natural Resources representative that there were approximately 100 people stranded on an ice floe and that there were an additional 30 to 40 people in the water. Coast Guard District 9 Command Center launched two 20-foot Special Purpose Craft–airboats from Station Marblehead, two MH-65 Dolphin helicopters from Coast Guard Air Station Detroit, and two MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City to respond for a mass rescue.
