LockedOn 360 Mobile Gun Vise

Successful hunters have been on hundreds of deer hunts, but every hunter knows that only a handful of hunts make meaningful memories. For example, the first successful deer hunt is burned into the memory of every hunter. The hunt that produced their “buck of a lifetime” is also unforgettable.

The ultimate unforgettable memory- the first time a young hunter – son, daughter, grandchild, child of a family friend -kills their first deer.

Until you do that, you only think you know all the things that can go wrong on a hunt. One of the most discouraging things that can go wrong for a young hunter is missing their first shot or worst wounding the game when the big moment finally arrives.

While nothing can be done about buck fever in a young hunter, the chances of a miss can be vastly reduced if the young hunter has a stable rest for the shot.

LockedOn 360 tip of the week: Take your youth to the gun range. Place a 22 or similar small caliber firearm in the LockedOn 360, give them great hearing protection and let them get comfortable shooting with a scoped gun. Build their confidence though different scenarios, distances and target sizes. Wait to introduce the larger caliber firearm once in the hunting stand. Read more

Iowa deer poachers caught on camera

Fort Dodge, Iowa – A nine month investigation into deer and turkey poaching in Webster County, Iowa, was closed on Oct. 7, when Kyle Alstott, 23, of Fort Dodge, the last of the 10 individuals facing charges from Iowa and Nebraska, pleaded guilty.

In November 2015, Iowa State Conservation Officer Matt Bruner came across a website run by Alstott with photos and videos of deer, deer hunts, fishing and other outdoor activities.

Alstott and Roman Thompson, 22, from Omaha, Neb., are co-owners of ATM Outdoors, an outdoors /hunting filming company based in Fort Dodge. They produce photos, videos and deer stories for their website which is where Officer Bruner began his investigation.

Bruner recognized Kyle Alstott and Michael Alstott, 44, of Fort Dodge, from photos on the website as individuals that he charged for hunting over bait in 2011. He began comparing the deer and stories on the website to licenses the different individuals featured had purchased in various states.

The information didn’t line up. Read more

New agreement will provide $550,000 for Michigan pheasant habitat restoration

A male, in the background, and female ring-necked pheasant are shown. The species was introduced to the United States from Asia in the late 1800s.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is partnering with Enbridge Energy Partners, L.P. and Pheasants Forever in an agreement that will see Enbridge provide half a million dollars for pheasant habitat restoration in Michigan.

Improvement projects are scheduled to take place over the next three years in various areas in Michigan, focused on Michigan Pheasant Restoration Initiative priority landscapes and oak savanna restoration.

“This partnership allows the parties involved to work together cooperatively, producing significant habitat improvements for wildlife and the betterment of upland game hunting opportunities,” said DNR Director Keith Creagh.

In 2013, Enbridge replaced a 30-inch pipeline, which runs for about two miles across the Crane Pond State Game Area in Cass County. As a result of the permitting process, the DNR and Enbridge worked together to improve the pipeline infrastructure and restore and improve habitat impacted during construction. Read more
