Understanding the Flight of the Arrow

By Glen Wunderlich

Archery deer season is upon us Michiganders.  While myriad preparations abound with stands and gear, it’s also a good time to understand the flight of arrows, or bolts (for those with crossbows).  With that mentioned, the focus will be on certain principles that can be applied effectively to vertical bows or crossbows and the term arrow will be used for simplification.

Computer aids such as ballistic calculators and trajectory charts are a good place to begin.  However, there is only one certain way to learn the characteristics of your bow and that’s to shoot it – even if it performed flawlessly in the past.  Slight changes in string wear and other mechanical aspects of a bow are in a state of constant change, albeit minimal at times.  Add to that any significant changes in arrows, broadheads, dampeners, etc. and your arrows may very well strike targets differently.  It’s your duty to find out through testing.

Knowing your range is critical.  Rangefinders have become quite affordable over the years and can spell the difference between success and failure.  They can be used to set up targets, as well as to identify and range markers such as stumps, rocks or even a decoy at your hunting site.  Then, as a deer enters the area, its distance from you will be known without fumbling for anything.

Multi-reticle crossbow scopes must be tested.  There simply is no way to trust that the distance indicators on a given scope will correspond to your arrow’s trajectory without doing some shooting.  Start at a relatively close range of 20 yards and get the shots close to center.  Then, walk the target out to your farthest range you will shoot ethically – say 40 yards.  Dial in the arrow at that range and then check it at 30 and 20 yards without changing the scope’s settings.  Chances are that the arrows will strike in a conservative 6-inch kill zone.  If not, take note.

Personally, my Horton

Horton Vision Crossbow

crossbow launches arrows at a speed of 293 feet-per-second (fps) and then, of course, slows down progressively.  Considering the speed of sound at 1120 fps, a deer will hear the sound of the string before the arrow reaches it.  The longer the shot, the more time the deer will have to react to the sound.

It’s understood that not all deer will react to the sound of the string snapping, but some will; the term is “jumping the string.”  For this reason, I have set a maximum range of 30 yards to minimize the chance of a deer being startled and thus moving.  Even though my bow is relatively “quiet” it makes enough noise to surprise a deer in still air at prime time.  No manner of practice will help.

If you will hunt from a blind or treestand, take a friend along for a practice session to retrieve arrows for you.  It won’t prepare you for an adrenaline rush, but your confidence level will improve, because you’ll understand the flight of your arrow.

Finally, practice by keeping all shots within a 6-inch circle.  This conservative target provides some margin for error, but it is still the hunter’s responsibility to know and shoot within his personal limitations.

HSUS Spearheads Arizona Ballot Issue to Ban Mountain Lion Hunting

In November 2018, the world’s wealthiest animal-rights organization intends to ask Arizona voters to ban mountain lion, bobcat and other big-cat hunting. Operating under the name ‘Arizonans for Wildlife,’ the campaign is really being spearheaded by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). The group filed language on September 25 with the Arizona Secretary of State’s office to allow the signature-gathering process to begin in an effort to qualify the issue for the 2018 ballot. If the language is approved, the HSUS-led group would have to gather 150,642 valid voter signatures by July 5, 2018 to qualify for the election on November 6, 2018.

The language filed by the anti-hunting group would remove mountain lions and bobcats from the state’s list of huntable species. Under the proposed language, mountain lions and bobcats, along with jaguars, ocelots and lynx, would be called “wild cats,” and be prohibited from hunting or trapping. Read more

How did Michigan’s Au Sable River change the world?

The Michigan History Museum’s newest exhibition opens Sept. 30

In 1959, 16 fishermen, united by their love of trout and the Au Sable River, gathered at George Griffith’s home east of Grayling, in Michigan’s northern Lower Peninsula. The sportsmen were concerned about the need for long-term conservation of Michigan’s coldwater streams. They were convinced that better and more scientific habitat care would help the state’s trout population thrive, creating not only better fishing, but also a better environment. Nearly 60 years later, Trout Unlimited, the organization founded by those fishermen, has become a national champion of fish habitat conservation.

Trout Unlimited’s founding on the Au Sable is showcased in the Michigan History Museum’s newest exhibition, The River that Changed the World, opening Saturday, Sept. 30. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day, visitors will get a first look at the new exhibition, and opportunities to engage with guest presenters and hands-on activities.

“The Au Sable River has influenced – and continues to influence – people around the world,” said Mark Harvey, Michigan’s state archivist and the exhibition’s curator. “The stories in the exhibition demonstrate the innovative and unprecedented ways private citizens and state government worked together to conserve and protect the river and sustainably manage its fish populations.”

The exhibition features George Griffith’s 24-foot-long Au Sable river boat, surrounded by river scenes. A re-creation of the Wanigas Rod Shop introduces fly fisherman and rod maker Art Neumann, another founding member of Trout Unlimited. Nearby, visitors of all ages can learn how to tie a fly and compare tied flies to real insects under a microscope. Read more

D.C. Court of Appeals Denies En Banc Hearing on DC Concealed Carry Suit

HEARING ON WRENN, A MAJOR WIN FOR SAF

BELLEVUE, WA — The U.S. District Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit has turned down a request from the city for an en banc hearing on the concealed carry case of Wrenn v. District of Columbia, amounting to a strategic win for the Second Amendment Foundation.

According to the court, not a single judge on the court requested a hearing. Earlier, a three-judge panel had ruled in favor of plaintiffs Brian Wrenn and SAF. The case challenges the District’s carry permit policy that requires citizens to provide a “good reason” to be issued a permit. The Appeals Court struck down that requirement.

“Ten years ago, Washington D.C.’s political leadership tried to extinguish Second Amendment rights before the Supreme Court,” noted attorney Alan Gura, who represents the plaintiffs. “The result was D.C. v. Heller, a tremendous victory for the rights of all Americans. With the court of appeals again confirming the people’s right to bear arms, Washington, D.C.’s politicians must once again ask themselves whether it makes sense to keep resisting our fundamental rights.”

Gura successfully argued both the 2008 District of Columbia v. Heller case and 2010 McDonald v. City of Chicago case before the U.S. Supreme Court. Both cases dealt directly with Second Amendment issues. Heller affirmed that the amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms, and McDonald incorporated the Second Amendment to the states via the 14thAmendment. Read more
