Live eagle cam at Platte River State Fish Hatchery

A partnership between the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Carbon Media Group now allows the public a rare chance to watch, for free, a pair of nesting bald eagles currently in residence at the Platte River State Fish Hatchery near the Benzie County town of Beulah.The CarbonTV Eagle Cam live streams 24/7 from carbontv.com/cams/carbontv-eagle-cam and the site also features taped clips of the eagles engaging in various activities, including eating a rabbit, building and clearing their nest, and being visited by great horned owls.

The pair’s nest is 100 feet above the ground, located on the Platte River. An egg was laid over the weekend and the pair will hopefully hatch and rear their eaglets throughout the summer of 2016. Read more

Recipients of $350,000 from DNR’s Dam Management Grant Program announced

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has approved two Dam Management Grant Program projects totaling $350,000. These projects will help remove obsolete structures or repair functioning dams, resulting in improved fisheries, aquatic resources and public safety.The two projects funded this year are:

The city of Corunna, which was awarded $301,500 to provide assistance to fund the Corunna Dam #379 removal project located on the Shiawassee River (Shiawassee County).

The DNR Fisheries Division, which was awarded $48,500 to further fund the Big Creek Impoundment repair project (Crawford County).
This grant program was designed and launched in late 2012 to support Gov. Rick Snyder’s initiative concerning local infrastructure needs, and is funded by General Fund dollars appropriated by the Legislature for this purpose. A committee consisting of DNR and Department of Environmental Quality staff, along with local fisheries biologists and technical experts, reviewed the proposals. Read more

Bazooka for Drones

No, it’s not a joke. OpenWorks Engineering (www.openworksengineering.com/Skywall) has just announced their “SkyWall 100” -a pneumatically powered, shoulder-fired gun designed specifically for the purpose catching flying drones. With a range of 100 meters, and can be loaded (or re-loaded) in about 8 seconds, and depends on a digital sighting system that sounds a lot like many other shoulder-fired weapons.

The SkyWall 100 is designed not to destroy drones. Instead, it will capture them in a net -deployed from an “intelligent (and resuable) munition) – and parachute both safely to earth. The drone can be forensically examined and the munition re-used. Future projectiles are planned with jamming systems to prevent payloads from being remotely detonated.
