The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Pointe Mouillee Waterfowl Festival committee will host the 65th annual Pointe Mouillee Waterfowl Festival on Sept. 8-9. Taking place at Pointe Mouillee State Game Area (PMSGA) in Brownstown Township, activities begin at 8 a.m. Saturday and run through 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free, and the entire family is welcome. After a week of intensive electrofishing and gill netting activities in Sandusky Bay, Maumee Bay and their main tributaries, officials have found no bighead or silver Asian carps in western Lake Erie. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) continue to work together to assess the current status of bighead and silver carp within western Lake Erie bays and select tributaries. PHOENIX — After three consecutive years of failing to fledge its young bald eagles, an important Arizona nest site is back to adding to the growth of the state’s bald eagle population with two nestlings surviving to fledge on their own.
The nest became a challenge for Arizona Game and Fish Department bald eagle biologists when it began to fail at producing young eagles that made it to fledging age after many years of consecutive success. Read more

This past weekend former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney made sure of that when he tapped Wisconsin Congressman, Paul Ryan (R–1, Janesville, WI) to join him in his effort to unseat President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden on November 6th.
While many candidates for elected office profess to be hunters and don flannel shirts at this time of year, Ryan doesn’t dabble. He is an avid bowhunter, a fact that has been a point of pride to Wisconsin sportsmen and women over the years. Read more

This Wednesday, August 15, the Michigan Senate Judiciary Committee will vote on legislation to repeal Michigan’s “permit-to-purchase” and registration requirements for handguns. House Bill 5225, which seeks to replace the state handgun “permit-to-purchase” requirement with the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), already passed in the state House of Representatives by an overwhelming 74 to 36 vote (found on page 14 of the House Journal) on June 13. Emerald ash borer, beech bark disease infecting hardwoods…
Foresters from the Department of Natural Resources and Michigan Technological University are examining more than 30,000 acres of state forest land for signs of emerald ash borer (EAB) and beech bark disease (BBD). The process of harvesting ash and beech from identified areas is ongoing in an attempt to recover timber value before the resources are killed by the two exotic forest pests. Read more
