SAF Files Federal Lawsuit Against Illinois Gun Ban

The Second Amendment Foundation today filed a federal lawsuit challenging the recently-signed Illinois gun ban legislation, alleging it to be unconstitutional and asserting the state has criminalized “a common and important means of self-defense.” The case is known as Harrel v. Raoul.

Joining SAF in this legal action are the Illinois State Rifle Association, Firearms Policy Coalition, C4 Gun Store LLC, Marengo Guns, Inc. and a private citizen, Dane Harrel. Named as defendants are Attorney General Kwame Raoul, Illinois State Police Director Brendan F. Kelly, and other officials in their official capacities. The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois.

“Illinois has banned the future sale, importation, purchase, delivery and manufacture of the most popular rifle in the United States, along with their standard capacity magazines,” noted SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. “People who already own such firearms must now register their guns with the State Police. This ban violates the constitutional rights of Illinois gun owners, and we intend to prove it in court.

“Once again,” he continued, “Illinois lawmakers are scapegoating firearms and people who own them in a transparent attempt to convince people they are doing something about the horrible violence the state has suffered in recent years, especially in Chicago. In reality, it’s an effort to distract the public from the fact that these same lawmakers have been unable or unwilling to crack down on criminals responsible for violent crime.” Read more

Michigan DNR to draw down water levels at Cornwall Flooding in Cheboygan County

To address public safety and infrastructure concerns, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources plans to draw down the impoundment behind the Cornwall Flooding dam in Cheboygan County later this year.

The Cornwall Flooding, owned by the DNR, is in the heart of the Pigeon River Country State Forest and is a popular spot for fishing, wildlife viewing, kayaking and other outdoor activities.

Built in 1966, the Cornwall Flooding dam is classified by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy as a high hazard dam. This means that the dam is in an area where a failure may cause serious damage to inhabited homes or infrastructure downstream, where environmental degradation would be significant, or where danger to individuals exists with the potential for the loss of life. View the Action at Tropical Feeding Stations

A favorite tropical tanager among many birders is the Golden-hooded Tanager (photo by Alexander Montero).
A variety of hummingbirds can be observed at the Ecuador and Panama hummingbird feeders (Violet-tailed Sylph photo by Ben Lucking).

We would probably all enjoy a visit to a lush tropical birding hotspot, especially birders who live in northern latitudes where a winter white landscape persists. But even Sunbelt birders are game for a rainforest experience. The next best thing to visiting a feeding station in a tropical rainforest is to monitor live-streaming cameras positioned at feeders in Panama, Ecuador, and Costa Rica. Start by checking out the feeding station at the Canopy Lodge in central Panama where you will be treated to views of visiting tanagers, toucans, motmots, and more. Then, if hummingbirds are among your favorites, you must check on the Sachatama Lodge feeders, located in a cloud forest in the Mindo Valley of Ecuador. And then there is the Costa Rican bird buffet to complete a bird feeding tour of 3 prime tropical locations.

To Panama We Go!

A primary destination for many birders interested in viewing a tropical feeding station is the Panama Fruit Feeder Cam, hosted on the grounds of the Canopy Lodge in El Valle de Anton, provided via the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The feeding platform and hummingbird feeder is positioned about 40 feet from the main lodge, one of several feeding stations on the property for guests to view many of the remarkable tropical birds found in area. A small stream called the Rio Guayabo flows past the feeders, which you can often hear in the background along with bird songs that permeate the lush landscape of the Canopy Lodge grounds and surrounding rainforest. Be sure to view some of the spectacular birds of tropical Panama live at http://cams.allaboutbirds.org/channel/57/Panama_Fruit_Feeders/

To learn more about some of the interesting birds you see, you can continue scrolling down from the live cam screen to the “Species Info” section, which shows photos of birds that you may see while watching the Panama rainforest feeding station. Read more

Baschieri & Pellagri Gives Competitive Shooters the Edge

January 2023 – Baschieri & Pellagri USA, manufacturer of the world’s premiere shotshells for sporting clays and hunting, gives competitive shooters, especially those who hammer hard-to-hit plastic targets, a decisive advantage with the new Helice.

For this reason, helice shooters demand shot-to-shot consistency, and Helice Domination provides it. A triple threat of perfect payloads, honed velocities, and a wad that delivers undeniable performance, this load was designed specifically with the helice shooter in mind.

Helice is available in 12-gauge, 2 3/4-inch loads with perfectly spherical White Lead in shot sizes of #7 1/2 (1300 fps) and #8 (1365 fps).
