This straight-walled cartridge offers 100% more energy than a 12 gauge slug with 55% less felt recoil. When compared to its rifle counterparts and predecessors, the 400 Legend brings the same amount of energy as the 450 Bushmaster, with a reduction in felt recoil of 20%. Finally—the 400 Legend offers 25% more energy than the 350 Legend for more penetration and improved terminal ballistics. GOA, GOF File Appeal in Lawsuit Challenging Cornyn-Murphy Under 21 Wait Periods

Washington, D.C. — Today, Gun Owners of America (GOA) and the Gun Owners Foundation (GOF) filed a notice of appeal with the 5th Federal Circuit in their lawsuit challenging de facto waiting periods for NICS background checks on gun buyers under the age of 21.

This new policy is a result of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, also known as the Cornyn-Murphy gun control package, which passed last summer. Under the law, unconstitutional waiting periods are being imposed on young adults because a review of juvenile justice records, state mental health records, and those from local law enforcement where the buyer resides is now required. This review is in addition to those records already held by the FBI background check system. Because state and local agencies are not equipped or prepared to provide this new information in a timely manner, young gun buyers are simply forced to wait with no recourse, which is a clear violation of their Second Amendment rights.

Anticipation is high for Iowa’s 2023 pheasant season

Iowa’s pheasant population is up, the crop harvest is advancing quickly and the weekend weather forecast is setting up for an excellent opening weekend for Iowa’s pheasant season.

The annual August roadside survey found Iowa’s statewide pheasant population to be nearly 23 birds per route; a 15 percent increase over 2022. The biggest increases were in the southwest, northwest and northeast regions.

“We couldn’t ask for better opening weekend conditions,” said Todd Bogenschutz, upland wildlife biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. “Our bird population is highest since 2015, and much of the corn and soybeans will be harvested by the time the season opens. Combine those two factors, plus cooler weekend temperatures, we should see a lot of pheasants taken.” Read more

Without question, bats are one of nature’s most fascinating and misunderstood creatures. Despite their small size, they are also one of the longest-lived mammals in our region, with some recorded as old as 31 years!

Michigan is home to nine species of bats, all of which are insectivores. Their membranous wings, unique to bats, have a completely different structure than that of birds or insects. Although we rarely see them, bats are hard at work all around the world each night – eating insects, pollinating flowers and spreading seeds that grow new plants and trees.

Mass collision of birds in Chicago highlights need to protect migrating species

Earlier this month, nearly a thousand migratory songbirds on their way to Central America for the winter died in window collisions with a single building in Chicago. Species included many long-distance warblers that also travel through Michigan, including hundreds of palm warblers and yellow-rumped warblers.

The tragic loss of this many birds is a conservation concern for birds already facing significant population declines from habitat loss and climate change. North America is home to nearly 3 billion fewer breeding birds compared to 1970. Additionally, two-thirds of North American bird species are at risk of extinction due to climate change. Many of the affected species were neotropical migrants, which are long-distance migrants that breed in North America and overwinter in Central and South America. These birds already face a complex range of threats such as development pressures and invasive species.
