Sauer Introduces SL5 Waterfowl Shotguns

San Antonio, Texas – J.P. Sauer & Sohn, Germany’s oldest manufacturer of hunting firearms, is pleased to introduce the new line of SL5 Waterfowl shotguns. Available in three models – Fred Bear Old School Camo, Fred Bear Old School Camo stock and forearm with brown Cerakote barrel and action, and Black Synthetic – these 12-gauge, semi-auto shotguns are rugged, reliable, and accurate in the most extreme hunting conditions. All are available in 3.5” models, which can accommodate 2 ¾”, 3” or 3.5” shotshells. Capacity is 3+1. The Black Synthetic model is also available in a 3” chambering.

Inertia-driven like the SL5 Turkey gun, the smooth-cycling SL5 Waterfowl shotgun requires fewer parts than a gas-driven gun and minimal cleaning – ideal traits for a duck and goose gun that is exposed to the elements. All SL5 3.5” models have an oversized extended bolt handle and release button making it easy to work with gloves on in frigid temperatures and are available in three barrel lengths – 26-inch, 28-inch, or 30-inch. The barrels are chrome lined with a stepped rib for precise alignment. The receiver is made with a steel upper for strength and durability, and the lower is aluminum for improved balance and reduced weight. Read more

New NDA Video: How to Easily Debone Venison for Travel in CWD Zones

October 20, 2022 – Avoiding transportation of deer carcasses out of CWD zones helps prevent the spread of chronic wasting disease into new areas, and the National Deer Association has released a new video helping deer hunters debone their venison for safe, legal travel.

The new video, available on NDA’s YouTube channel at youtube.com/deerassociation, was created in partnership with The Bearded Buck of Pennsylvania. NDA Chief Conservation Officer Kip Adams processes a doe harvested at The Bearded Buck property while teaching techniques for skinning and deboning venison.

“Whether you’re hunting deer in the early season in warm temperatures or hunting a CWD management zone where carcass transportation is restricted, it’s a useful skill to be able to quickly skin, quarter and de-bone venison for easy and legal transportation,” said Adams. “If you hunt in a chronic wasting disease (CWD) zone, it’s critical to prevent the spread of disease to new areas by leaving the carcass in the CWD zone where you harvested the deer.

In the video, Adams shows all the steps on how to process efficiently, effectively and safely according to CWD guidelines. The new video will help deer hunters go from field to freezer in no time.

Acorn Abundance Influences Behaviors of Ohio’s Wildlife

Ohio wildlife, such as fox squirrels, seek out acorns as a food source during the fall and winter.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 2022 survey of acorn abundance on selected Ohio wildlife areas shows an average of 39% of white oaks and 37% of red oaks bore fruit, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. The long-term average for white oak production is 37%, and 54% for red oak production.“A mature oak tree can produce thousands of acorns, which in turn feed more than 90 of Ohio’s forest wildlife species,” said Division of Wildlife Chief Kendra Wecker. “Deer, turkeys, squirrels, ruffed grouse, blue jays, raccoons, woodpeckers, foxes, and more seek out and eat acorns throughout the fall and winter.”

:
Acorns come in two basic types: red and white. They are divided into these groups based on the type of oak tree. Red oak acorns take two years to develop, and the acorns are bitter, containing a large amount of the chemical tannin. White oak acorns take only one year to develop and have a sweeter taste. These differences cause periodic fluctuations in statewide acorn abundance. Low mast production years are a normal part of this cycle, and wildlife readily adapt to find alternative food sources. Southern Appalachian Elk Country to Receive $1.45 Million in Conservation Funding

MISSOULA, Mont. — Furthering more than three decades of support in the region, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and its partners allocated more than $1.45 million dollars over the next two years to benefit elk and elk country in Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

“RMEF always has and remains deeply invested in restoring elk to their historic range and ensuring their future success,” said Kyle Weaver, RMEF president and CEO. “This two-year commitment bolsters elk populations by supplying grant funding for habitat enhancement, land conservation and access, research and wildlife management projects across the five states.”

RMEF supplied nearly $650,000 in funding that leveraged more than $800,000 from partner groups.

Specific project work includes creating wildlife water sources, forest thinning, prescribed burning, invasive vegetation treatment, forage enhancement, chronic wasting disease surveillance, calf survival and genetic analysis research, and conserving two parcels for elk habitat and to improve public access for elk hunting and other recreational activities.

Federal Judge lets Anti-Gun Group Join SAF Mag Ban Case as Defendants

BELLEVUE, WA – A federal judge in Tacoma, Washington has allowed a Seattle-based gun prohibition lobbying group to intervene as a defendant in the Second Amendment Foundation’s challenge of an Evergreen State magazine ban which became effective July 1.

The billionaire-backed Alliance for Gun Responsibility requested intervention only days after the law took effect. Their motion was supported by Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson and State Patrol Chief John Batiste, who are defendants in the case. The Alliance supported the magazine ban as part of its gun prohibition political agenda, and Ferguson requested the legislation earlier this year.

“Apparently the Alliance is worried Ferguson isn’t capable of defending his own magazine ban in this lawsuit,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. “Obviously, after the Supreme Court’s Bruen decision last June, the gun ban lobby fears the state may not be able to defend any of its gun laws, including a couple passed by initiative campaigns the Alliance financed.” Read more
