Michigan: Tippy Dam boat launch in Manistee County is open following vehicle mishap

The Tippy Dam boating access site located along the Manistee River, off Dilling Road in Brethren, is open, following a vehicle being partially submerged in the river Tuesday morning.

Just before 6 a.m., an angler was backing their boat into the Tippy Dam boating access site. Due to a mechanical issue, the driver could not stop the vehicle, which then backed into the river and partially submerged.

A passerby assisted the driver by using a tow strap to remove the vehicle from the river, which was taken away by a tow truck.

The scene was cleared by a conservation officer around 7:30 a.m. No injuries were reported.

The driver’s name is not being released.

Federal Ammunition Turns 100

North American Arms is pleased to announce that today (04/26) it became an employee-owned company. After a 30-year run as president/owner of this manufacturer of “Convenient, Reliable, Effective” mini-revolvers and small semiautomatic pistols, Sandy Chisholm has sold the company to an Employee Stock Ownership Trust which, over the course of the next “several” years, will annually distribute equity ownership pieces of the company to the employees of NAA, at no cost to the employees. This is intended to be a retirement and motivational vehicle.

Chisholm explained that he chose this means of exit for several reasons. First was his interest in sharing the success of his small business with the employees who were responsible for building it. “As many people know, I’ve been a very remote owner since I purchased the business in 1992. I have lived in both suburban Philadelphia and now Naples FL, which is some distance from the factory’s location in Provo, UT. While I’ve made literally 100s of trips over the years to visit the facility and my employees, I’ve always depended heavily on those at the factory to operate the business. Apart from financial support and enthusiastic encouragement, my contributions have been very modest”.

Chisholm also acknowledged his interest in maintaining the business’s independence and stability in the Provo community. “Yes, I’ve had several unsolicited “expressions of interest” from other manufacturers in the firearms industry. NAA dominates its small niche for concealed carry firearms and enjoys an over-sized brand and reputation for quality and customer service that would burnish any other manufacturer’s reputation. Unfortunately, that would almost certainly lead to a relocation of this business and the loss of jobs for all those who I want to protect and reward”, he added. “This route assures that stability”. Six Mexican Wolf Cross-Fosters Hit Major Milestone

Mexican wolf pups about to be cross-fostered, shown in photo from 2020.

PHOENIX ? The Mexican Wolf Recovery Program reached a major milestone on April 1 when six cross-fostered Mexican wolves matured to breeding age in the wild. In doing so, the six wolves are now able to be counted as contributing to the genetic recovery of the subspecies.

This achievement brings the total number of cross-fosters surviving in the wild in Arizona and New Mexico to 13 and highlights the continuing success of Mexican wolf recovery efforts by the Arizona Game and Fish Department, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, and other conservation partners.

Cross-fostering is an innovative technique used by the Mexican Wolf Interagency Field Team to increase genetic diversity in Mexican wolf populations in the wild. Wolf pups are born in captivity at one of a number of different accredited breeding facilities across the country. When the pups are 14 days old or younger, they are placed into a den of wild Mexican wolves with pups of the same age. The surrogate wild wolf parents raise the new genetically diverse pups as if they were a part of the original litter. Read more

Sgt. Mark DePew, who leads DNR Law Enforcement Division’s efforts on the river, said, “Joining efforts in this alliance helps to preserve this endangered species when they are most vulnerable. By working together, we can double the efforts, making a greater impact on conservation and preservation efforts.”

The lake sturgeon, which can weigh up to 200 pounds and live to be 100 years old, is listed as a threatened species in Michigan, with any sport fishing being closely regulated. Read more
