Firearms Policy Coalition “Rebukes” Proposed “Ghost Gun” Rule

Washington, D.C., April 12, 2022

Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) has released the following statement regarding President Biden’s new ban on self-built firearms and nomination of Steven Dettelbach, former U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF):

Today, President Biden continued his siege on the Second Amendment by announcing gun-control regulations targeting self-manufactured arms and confirming his intention to nominate Steven Dettelbach, an Everytown for Gun Safety-endorsed, anti-Second Amendment zealot to lead the ATF.

Biden’s proposed rule to eliminate so-called “ghost guns” would create an entirely new class of highly regulated items by redefining the term “firearm” to include a host of parts, and collections of parts ATF now considers “readily” convertible into functional firearms. This move calls into question the legality of an unknowable number of parts and kits purchased by peaceable people for decades.

The rule, which raises serious concerns about executive overreach and separation of powers, is yet another assault by the Biden administration on the rights and liberties of everyday gun owners. FPC condemns in the strongest terms this attack on the American tradition of home gunmaking and any effort to disarm or criminalize peaceable people.

Far from “clarifying” anything, the rulemaking tortures simple terms from law into multi-part definitions, with newly injected sub-terms like “readily” having their own lengthy definitions. This is clearly an attempt to sidestep Congress, as Biden even indicated in his remarks today.

The FPC legal team is evaluating the final rule for litigation options and will be seeking plaintiffs in the near future.

FPC also unequivocally opposes Biden’s nomination of Steven Dettelbach to lead the ATF. Dettelbach has led a career marked by proposals of radical gun-control measures, including semiautomatic firearm bans, the absurd expansion of mythical “gun-free zones,” and universal background checks. Dettelbach’s support comes from anti-rights organizations, and his nomination is nothing short of a stealth attempt by the Biden Administration to appoint someone with the same radical values as David Chipman, but without the extensive public paper trail.

Individuals who wish to help overturn the Biden administration’s abusive overreach of executive power and help defeat Dettelbach’s nomination can visit StopATF.org and join the FPC Grassroots Army at JoinFPC.org. Read more

NSSF Response to Biden’s Gun Control Agenda

NEWTOWN, Conn. — The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF)®, the firearm industry trade association, listened with keen interest to President Joe Biden’s nomination of Steve Dettelbach for Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). NSSF has long-advocated that the ATF needs a U.S. Senate-confirmed director, and that person must be an individual who will faithfully execute the duties of regulating the firearm industry in accordance with established laws and regulations. Any nominee for this position of public trust, that has direct oversight of how law-abiding Americans are able to exercise their Second Amendment rights, must be a person wedded to the rule of law, and one that will not politicize the ATF to advance a partisan gun control agenda that exceeds what is established in law by the U.S. Congress.

NSSF is committed to a thorough examination of Dettelbach’s record and qualifications and will listen carefully to his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee. NSSF has significant concerns regarding Dettelbach’s previous public statements supporting bans on Modern Sporting Rifles (MSRs), or AR-15 semiautomatic rifles, universal background checks, which are unworkable without a national firearm registry that is already forbidden by federal law, and extreme-risk protection orders, or so-called “red flag” laws, without protections for Due Process considerations. Dettelbach was also previously endorsed by the gun control group, Everytown for Gun Safety, for his support for policies restricting Second Amendment rights.

NSSF is also closely monitoring the submission of the Final Rule by the Department of Justice (DOJ) to redefine frames and receivers, which would significantly alter the sale and possession of not only personally-made firearms (PFMs) but numerous other types and models as well. NSSF will review the Final Rule carefully to see if DOJ listened and took into consideration the industry’s comments that were submitted. As proposed, this rule radically alters the manufacturing and compliance processes for manufacturers of traditional firearms, not just the making of incomplete, unfinished parts Congress has not chosen to regulate. SIG P322 – Rimfire Revolution?

By Rich Grassi
The copy from SIG reads “The highest capacity, most advanced 22 pistol in its class.” Apparently, they didn’t just look at what others were doing. They applied their own thinking to the problem of a gun that’s a trainer for new users, for young shooters and for people who carry SIG P3xx-series guns.Like the class-creating P365, they upped the ammo capacity in the SIG P322, this time to 20 rounds in the magazine (two are supplied) plus another in the chamber.Knowing the propensity of folks to add muzzle devices to guns including 22-trainers, they gave users a threaded barrel – covered, so you could get the gun apart easily if you’re not adding stuff to the front of the gun. They supplied the thread adapter so you could add stuff to the front of the gun.If you want even more gear slung onto the front of the pistol, there’s a section of rail for a dust cover for your favorite gun light, laser or whatever. They use fiber optic sights front and back, as well as making the rear sight adjustable for windage and elevation. Or you can simply remove the rear sight/cover plate and attach an optic … like the SIG ROMEOZero (without any adapter plates). After the visual shooting solution, you may find the trigger isn’t to your liking – if you don’t like the flat-faced trigger. It seems that’s the ‘in’ thing, but they provide a curved trigger shoe for those who are flat trigger averse. The slide stop and manual safety (calm down, it’s a rimfire trainer) are bilateral, appearing on both sides of the pistol. The magazine release button can be reversed.

Above, the chamber plug is turned to “dryfire” mode, as indicated in the owner’s manual. Below, the rear sight is adjustable for elevation, windage.

The gun, while appearing to be a striker-fired job, is (like most rimfire trainers of my acquaintance) hammer-fired. They call it ‘single-action,’ meaning that the press of the trigger only releases the hammer from the sear allowing the gun to fire. There are front- and rear cocking serrations, a fluted chamber (don’t recall seeing those since HK centerfire autoloaders) and the gun ships with a magazine-loading assistant. That’s likely to be handy when you’re loading twenty-round magazines. And, 25-round magazines are apparently being made as well.

That’s gotten you caught up to date on the new gun. Except for the price. While it wasn’t in stock at Cabela’s, where I looked online, the price was listed as just under $400. Read more

California: DFW Wants Dog Owners “Be Mindful of Salmon Poisoning Disease

Dog owners in northern California are reminded to take precautions to protect their pets from Salmon Poisoning Disease. Salmon Poisoning Disease is a potentially fatal condition seen only in dogs after they eat certain types of raw or cold smoked fish like trout and salmon that are infected with a bacteria-like organism, Neorickettsia helminthoeca, which is transmitted by the parasitic flatworm (or “fluke”) Nanophyetes salmincola. Michigan: Boardman Weir in Operation to Support Fisheries Study

Staff from the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, in collaboration with Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, are conducting a trapping study to determine the run size of white suckers and longnose suckers in the Boardman River. In order to complete the study, the Boardman River Weir, in Grand Traverse County, will be in operation from approximately April 11 to May 30.

Anglers are reminded that while the Boardman weir is in operation, fishing is closed from 300 feet upstream of the weir to 300 downstream of the weir, as indicated on page 54 of the 2022 Michigan Fishing Guide.

Traps will be installed both upstream and downstream of the weir to capture migrating suckers in the river. After capture, the suckers will be measured, marked with a combination of fin clips, external tags and internal tags, and released on the opposite side of the weir from which they were caught. All fish species, including steelhead, captured in the traps will be released on the opposing side of the weir (e.g., fish moving upstream will be permitted to continue up toward the Union Street Dam). Clover as a Food Plot

By Glen Wunderlich

Charter Member Professional Outdoor Media Association (POMA)

As each season of deer hunting commences, I watch over lush food plots of turnips in anticipation of hungry whitetails rushing to the nutritious vegetation.  There is no doubt about the lure of brassicas when the weather turns sour and the turnips sweeten to perfection.  However, the best early season attractiveness in whitetails’ diets goes to clover blends in our climate.

Season upon season, it’s clear that deer prefer blends of legumes such as peas, beans, or clovers in the early seasons.  Unlike beans, however, perennial clover is not killed by frost and that makes it one of the most readily available food sources in the spring when stressed deer have consumed all the remnants of annual plantings.

It’s a common practice to blend brassicas with clover when planting, but once the brassicas are either eaten or die of natural causes, bare spots are everywhere and those areas will be filled with weeds if left to Mother Nature.  A rather simple solution to minimize this risk is to overseed in the spring when the soil is moist.  This practice sets the stage for years to come, providing minimal maintenance is given in terms of fertilizer and mowing.

Happy Clover

Like everything else, inflation and supply shortages must be considered.  It’s impossible to predict how much products will cost in the future or if they will even be in stock, so if you can afford today’s prices and you find seed, fertilizer, and lime, it’s best to stock up when supplies are found.

Ladino clover is a cool-season perennial legume that spreads by stolons – creeping horizontal plant stems or runners that take root at points along its length to form new plants.  In the proper growing environment, ladino clover can persist for four to five years or more, particularly in northern climates.  Deer will ignore undesirable weeds and will search out nutritious clover.  Beyond those years, it will be present, albeit in lesser amounts, but nonetheless will continue to be attractive.

Red clover is a cool-season legume that is classified as a biennial with a two-year lifespan, but with proper management it can persist for three or more years in northern states such as Michigan.

The use of a cultipacker or roller is important both before and after planting for a firm seedbed and to prevent planting the seed too deep.

Soil After Cultipacking

It also provides a smooth surface, which is important when it comes time to mow – and, clover loves mowing at heights five inches and above.

Soil samples are also necessary so that lime and fertilizer requirements can be defined for best results.

Seedbeds can be tilled to keep weed production down until planting time nears in August.  Then, before planting an application of glyphosate can eradicate pesky weeds before broadcasting the clover seed to minimize weed competition.

There is no easy way to get a good food plot established, but a good plot of clover will serve wildlife for years to come with minimal maintenance.

MAPLand Act Passes Senate, Heads to President’s Desk

MAPLand Act would fund land management agencies to standardize, compile, release digital map records to public

WASHINGTON – The Modernizing Access to Our Public Land Act, or MAPLand Act, which would modernize and digitize map records for the benefit of public lands hunters, advanced through the U.S. Senate late Wednesday under a procedural vote that allowed the unanimously supported bipartisan bill to move without objection.

Led by Sens. Jim Risch (R-ID) and Angus King (I-ME), the Senate vote follows the MAPLand Act’s near unanimous passage through the House of Representatives in March. Strong support by sportsmen’s and women’s groups, including Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, helped propel the bill to the president’s desk to be signed into law.

“Inadequate or faulty data can spell disaster for the public land hunter,” said BHA President and CEO Land Tawney, “and the importance of reliable, comprehensive information on access opportunities on our public lands cannot be overstated. Backcountry Hunters & Anglers thanks our Senate and House leaders who championed this foresighted, commonsense effort to address the problem of limited public access.”

The MAPLand Act would fund public land management agencies, including the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Forest Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Reclamation and Army Corps of Engineers, to standardize, compile and release digital map records to the public. The publicly available information would include the open or closed status of roads and trails on public lands, vehicle-use regulations and boundary details. Read more
