Michigan: 2022 fishing license season begins April 1

For anglers eager to hit the water, a reminder that Michigan’s new license season – the 2022 fishing license season – starts Friday, April 1. Licenses for the 2022 season are valid through March 31, 2023, and can be purchased at Michigan.gov/DNRLicenses. Anyone buying a fishing license online will have the opportunity to sign up for auto-renewal through the DNR eLicense system.

Last month, the DNR announced upcoming regulation changes adopted by the Michigan Natural Resources Commission. One notable change is the expansion of underwater spearfishing opportunities that will now include the chance to harvest additional species.

Starting April 1, underwater spearfishing for walleye, northern pike and lake trout has been added for Lake Michigan (waters south of the southernmost pier at Grand Haven) and Lake Huron (waters south of the southernmost pier of the Thunder Bay River, extending south to the mouth of the St. Clair River [Fort Gratiot Light]).

This opportunity requires a new underwater spearfishing license along with monthly effort and harvest reporting requirements. The underwater spearfishing license is complimentary, unless a DNR Sportcard is needed, and will be available only online at Michigan.gov/DNRLicenses. See page 16 of the 2022 fishing guide (available on the DNR guides and digests page) for more on this spearfishing opportunity.

Everyone planning to fish is encouraged to periodically review the digital version of the fishing guide for regulation updates throughout the 2022 fishing season. For tips on getting started, choosing locations, targeting different species and other “how to” information, visit Michigan.gov/Fishing.

Wolverine captured, collared and released in Utah

RANDOLPH — A wolverine that was spotted recently in Rich County is now wandering the Uinta Mountains with a GPS collar around its neck. Utah Division of Wildlife Resources biologists are excited to learn more about an elusive animal with only eight confirmed sightings in Utah since 1979.

“It’s amazing to get a chance to see a wolverine in the wild, let alone catch one,” DWR Northern Region Wildlife Manager Jim Christensen said. “This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

The initial sighting

The collaring effort started the morning of March 10 about 6 miles west of Randolph. A sheepherder who was tending sheep in the area came across an animal that was in the process of killing and wounding 18 of his sheep. The animal ran west as the sheepherder approached.

USDA-Wildlife Services was conducting livestock protection efforts in the area and sent both a helicopter and a fixed-wing aircraft to investigate. As Wildlife Services personnel flew over the area, they spotted the wolverine running through the snow. They immediately contacted their supervisor who in turn contacted the DWR.

Ohio: DeWine Signs BFA-Supported Permitless Carry Bill

At approximately 4:50 p.m. on Monday, March 14, 2022, Gov. Mike DeWine signed Senate Bill 215, which will make it legal to carry a concealed handgun without a license in Ohio 91 days after signing.

“This is a day that will go down in history,” said Dean Rieck, Executive Director of Buckeye Firearms Association. “It has been about 18 years since Ohio enacted HB 12 to bring licensed concealed carry to the state.

“However, the brass ring has always been to eliminate the licensing mandate, which people refer to as permitless carry or Constitutional Carry. And now, finally, that day is here. This is a great moment for Ohio and for those who wish to more fully exercise their Constitutional right to keep and bear arms. Read more

CCRKBA: Russian Outrages in Ukraine Prove Need for Armed Populace

BELLEVUE, WA. – Newly-revealed Russian outrages including the attacks on a maternity hospital and innocent women and children further reinforces the necessity for all European nations to have an armed and trained populace, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today.

“Several news agencies are reporting these barbaric attacks,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb, “which should erase any doubt about the intent of the Russian invaders, and the need for every able bodied citizen to have the tools to fight back. This is not a game of hypotheticals. Innocent women and children are being targeted.

“Other European nations should take a lesson from what is now unfolding in Ukraine,” he continued. “In this country, our founders wisely included the constitutional protection of the fundamental right to keep and bear arms, but nations in Europe have no such provisions. Still, we believe it is incumbent upon all nations to adopt a proactive stance, considering what we’ve seen unfolding over the past three weeks.

“An armed and trained population can defend their homes and their homeland,” Gottlieb observed. “Right now, other countries should be promoting private gun ownership rather than preventing their citizens from having firearms and being well-trained in their use.

“We’ve read and heard criticisms from the gun prohibition crowd about stressing the importance of our Second Amendment to the security of a free state,” he added, “but those critics are speaking from the comfort of a currently safe nation. While they seem content to discuss the Ukraine tragedy from an academic perspective, the people actually living through that horror have no such luxury, nor do citizens of adjacent nations who are justifiably concerned about their own safety with each passing day of conflict.
