SCI: House Committee Hearing on “CECIL Act” Attacks Hunters, Undermines Conservation

Safari Club International vehemently opposes H.R 2245, the “Conserving Ecosystems by Ceasing the Importation of Large Animal Trophies Act” or “CECIL Act,” which was the subject of a hearing in the U.S House of Representatives’ Natural Resources Subcommittee on Water, Oceans, and Wildlife.

“The number of co-sponsors for the ‘CECIL Act‘ has been cut in half every time it has been introduced in Congress, yet Chairman Raúl Grijalva insists on wasting the Committee’s time on a bill that contradicts proven conservation strategies and would only hurt the very wildlife species it claims to protect,” said SCI CEO W. Laird Hamberlin. “That’s why SCI joined with more than thirty other hunting and conservation groups in a letter to the committee opposing H.R. 2245. We should leave the decisions on African wildlife management to the respective African authorities in range countries instead of pretending that politicians in Washington know better.”

Several members and guests of the Subcommittee on Water, Oceans, and Wildlife, who understand the importance of well-regulated hunting programs and the role they play in conservation, also called out the hearing for what it truly was: a misguided and blatant attack on hunters. Read more

SAF: Prohibitionists Re-Packaging Gun Control as Public Health Crisis

BELLEVUE, WA – The billionaire-supported gun prohibition movement has re-packaged its gun control agenda as a public health crisis, trying to convince the public that the cure to violent crime is to amputate the Second Amendment from the Bill of Rights, the Second Amendment Foundation said today.

“They couldn’t sell gun control as crime control,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. “Then they couldn’t sell gun control as gun safety. Now they’re trying to convince the public that gun ownership is a public health issue.

“But this isn’t about public health,” he added. “This is all about politics. They’ve repackaged their agenda, but it’s the same old snake oil in a different bottle, and their strategy is right out of the gun control playbook.” Read more

Starline Brass Now Offering .350 Legend Brass

SEDALIA, MO – Starline Brass has added another rifle caliber, the .350 Legend to their growing line-up of high-quality rifle brass. Starline’s new .350 Legend rifle brass is produced with the same demanding quality control standards for which Starline has become known.

Introduced by Winchester and approved by SAAMI in January of 2019, the .350 Legend is a brand new cartridge that has no parent case. This tapered case has a rebated rim allowing it to utilize the standard .223 bolt face found on many common rifles including the AR-15. Like many other AR cartridges, the .350 Legend only requires changing the barrel and magazine. This cartridge’s allure is that it can be used for hunting in several states that allow straightwall rifle cartridges only, but doesn’t have near the recoil of other AR cartridges that fill this niche. Utilizing .355” diameter bullets, the .350 Legend is capable of impressive ballistics, without a lot of recoil. Read more

Petition Seeks to Remove Snail Darter From Endangered Species List, Marking Conservation Success

WASHINGTON The Center for Biological Diversity, former federal biologist Jim Williams and law professor Zygmunt Plater petitioned the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today to lift Endangered Species Act protection from snail darters.

Thanks to government and citizen efforts, the little fish has now successfully achieved recovery and is no longer in danger of extinction.

The 3-inch-long fish gained fame in the 1978 U.S. Supreme Court case Tennessee Valley Authority vs. Hill. The court upheld the newly passed Endangered Species Act at the request of conservationists and others who sought to protect the fish and its free-flowing habitat, along with 300 family farms, from the construction of the Tennessee Valley Authority’s highly controversial Tellico Dam on the Little Tennessee River.
