Hornady A-Tip Line of Match Bullets

(Grand Island, Nebr.) — The Hornady® Ballistic Development Group (BDG), a specialty research and design group at Hornady Manufacturing, has developed a new line of match bullets for the ultimate in precision and long-range shooting.

By drawing on years of research and experience with existing products like the ELD-X® and ELD® Match bullet lines, state-of-the-art equipment including Doppler radar, high-speed camera systems, plus investment in advanced manufacturing machinery, processes and quality control measures, the BDG has developed the A-Tip™ line of match projectiles.

The most striking visual feature of the A-Tip™ bullet is its long, uniform, precision-machined aluminum tip.

Study: Why Unique Finches Keep Their Heads of Many Colors

Ithaca, NY—There appears to be an underlying selection mechanism at work among Gouldian Finches—a mechanism that allows this species to produce and maintain individuals with red heads, black heads, and yellow heads. Research by scientists from the the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and other institutions, reveals what this additional evolutionary process might be. Findings were published today in the journal Nature Communications.

“Most people have heard of natural selection,” says lead author Kang-Wook Kim at the University of Sheffield. “But ‘survival of the fittest’ cannot explain the color diversity we see in the Gouldian Finch. We demonstrate that there is another evolutionary process—balancing selection—that has maintained the black or red head color over thousands of generations.”

The yellow-headed type (actually more orange) is produced by a completely different mechanism that is not yet understood. Yellow-headed Gouldian Finches make up less than one percent of the wild population. Read more

Steyr Arms THB Precision Rifle Now Available with Exclusive Manners Stock

BESSEMER, AL — Steyr Arms USA has announced that it has partnered with Manners Composite Stocks (MCS) to create a new variant of THB (Tactical Heavy Barrel) rifle designed to meet the needs of law enforcement and precision rifle shooters. Steyr and Manners worked together to create a highly optioned composite tactical stock that is mated to the exceptionally accurate THB barreled action. The new Steyr THB Manners rifle will be publicly unveiled at the 148th NRA Annual Meetings and Exhibits at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis on April 26 (Steyr Arms Booth #4423).

The Steyr THB Manners will be available in .308 Win. and 6.5 Creedmoor. The rifle is built on Steyr’s proven Safe Bolt System (SBS) bolt-action receiver with its 2+1 safety system. The SBS action is perfectly married to a heavy-profile, cold-hammer-forged barrel. In the .308 version, it will be available with either a 16-, 20- or 26-inch barrel, while the 6.5 Creedmoor barrel will be 26 inches in length. The muzzles of each barrel are threaded with a 5/8-24 RH thread pitch to accept muzzle brakes or suppressors, and a thread protector will be included.
