Michigan: have a bushel of fun picking pine cones

Looking for an outdoor side hustle? Collecting a bushel of pine cones next month will net you $75 and help the Michigan Department of Natural Resources plant trees in state forests.

Sept. 1 – 30, 2021, you can pick red pine cones and drop them off by appointment at six DNR locations: three in the Upper Peninsula and three in the Lower Peninsula.

Fresh cones can be found in felled treetops from recent timber sales, on state forestlands and in recently gathered squirrel caches (yes, you can steal from a squirrel). If picking from a recent timber sale, logger permission is necessary, and pickers must wear hardhats for safety. The simplest way, however, is to pick from living red pine trees where branches extend close to the ground.

Before you haul out your ladder, there are specific things foresters look for in a “perfect” fresh seed pine cone from a red pine – commit the following criteria to memory, because old cones or the wrong species won’t be accepted. You’ll also need to complete a few steps to register as a vendor in our online system so you can get paid for your efforts.

CCRKBA: Taliban Confiscating Guns, Biden Wants To

BELLEVUE, WA – Reports from Afghanistan have revealed the Taliban has been confiscating privately-held firearms on the grounds people don’t need them for safety, which sounds frighteningly similar to arguments Joe Biden has made in support of a ban on semi-auto rifles and 9mm pistols, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms observed.

“One of the first things Joe Biden did after taking office was push his gun ban agenda,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “One of the first things the Taliban did after taking Kabul was go door-to-door, seizing firearms. Biden says banning so-called ‘assault weapons’ and 9mm pistols will make the country safer. The Taliban is telling people they don’t need guns because they are safe. Those are some very alarming parallels.”

Delta Waterfowl Innovates Cutting-edge Duck Production Conditions Map

BISMARCK, NORTH DAKOTA — A new habitat modelling technique will allow The Duck Hunters Organization to produce maps of breeding waterfowl habitat conditions like never before. As first published in Delta’s “Fall Flight Forecast” media release earlier this month, The Duck Hunters Organization believes the innovative strategy marks a vast improvement in accuracy and precision over conditions maps of its kind.

“We’ve produced conditions maps in the past, but nothing ever on this level,” said Mike Buxton, Delta’s waterfowl programs manager and engineer of the new mapping technique. “Most duck production conditions maps are pretty rudimentary — they chart out these large ‘blobs’ of general areas based on direct observations and sometimes even educated guesses. It simply isn’t feasible to have enough staff spread across the entire breeding range to accurately gauge conditions firsthand throughout the year.”

Buxton’s mapping technique, on the other hand, relies on a series of complex computer models. While he won’t reveal all of his tricks — the innovative software strategy required considerable effort and a number of map iterations to perfect — precipitation as well as groundwater estimates are central to his computer modelling.
