Michigan: 2019 Black Lake lake sturgeon season set for Feb. 2

One of Michigan’s most anticipated angling opportunities – the annual lake sturgeon fishing season on Black Lake in Cheboygan County – will start at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2. The 2019 total season limit on Black Lake is seven lake sturgeon. To reduce the chance of exceeding that limit, officials will close the season if one of two scenarios occurs:

  • The sixth fish is harvested.
  • Five fish have been harvested at the end of any fishing day.

Daily season fishing hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The season will end either at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, or when one of the above scenarios is met, at which point DNR personnel on the lake will notify anglers to immediately stop fishing for lake sturgeon.

Registration is required to participate in the season. The DNR Onaway field station (approximately 5 miles north of Onaway on Route 11) will host early registration 2 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1.

“Early registration is a great opportunity for anglers to pick up their fishing identification flags and talk with DNR staff about season logistics and sturgeon populations,” said DNR fisheries biologist Tim Cwalinski.

Anglers are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the early registration Friday, but those unable to do so may register the next day at the registration trailer at Zolner Road ending on Black Lake. Morning registration begins at 7 a.m. each day of the season.

Anyone who successfully takes a lake sturgeon must contact an on-ice DNR employee and register the fish at the Zolner Road trailer registration site. Registration may include an examination of the fish’s internal organs and removal of a piece of fin tissue for DNA analysis and aging. Read more

USCCA: Reintroduce CCW Reciprocity Bill

GW:  Good luck with this legislation but my guess is that it’s too late now.  If it couldn’t be passed with the Republican majority of the past two years, I sure don’t know how anyone would really expect its passage now.  But, good luck, nonetheless.

Says Congress Must Act to Protect the Rights of Law-Abiding Americans

West Bend, WI – Tim Schmidt, the Founder and President of the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA), today offered his strong support for the reintroduction of national reciprocity for concealed carry on the first day of the 116th Congress and thanked U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (R-NC) for his continued leadership on this important issue. Hudson reintroduced the bill after it was passed by the House in December 2017 but was ultimately never approved by the Senate despite strong support from U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) and many others.

Schmidt acknowledged today that under an anti-Second Amendment House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, national reciprocity faces an uphill battle but said today that this issue is too important for Congress not to act.

“Law-abiding Americans should not lose their constitutional right to defend themselves, and risk arrest, simply for crossing state lines,” Schmidt said.“This legislation would not only protect law-abiding Americans from a patchwork of contradictory state laws, but it would also strengthen public safety by giving more Americans the ability to protect themselves and those around them. National concealed carry reciprocity has bipartisan support and Congress must act to protect the Constutitional rights of all law-abiding Americans. On behalf of the thousands of law-abiding members of the USCCA we thank Congressman Hudson and the many other Members of Congress in both parties who support this long overdue effort.” Read more

Hearing Protection Act Reintroduced in 116th Congress

GW: Sure hope I’m wrong, but I think the Republican majority had its chance to pass this needed legislation for the past two years and blew it. Good luck now, but chances are slim to none of passage.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On January 3rd, the first day of the 116th Congress, Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC-03) introduced the Hearing Protection Act (HPA) of 2019. An enhanced version of previous HPA’s, this legislation includes several suppressor related technical amendments that were first incorporated into the SHARE Act of 2017. The primary focus of the bill is to remove suppressors from the National Firearms Act (NFA), making it easier for law-abiding hunters and sportsmen to protect their hearing while at the range or in the field.

“The Hearing Protection Act is a commonsense bill that is important to all sportsmen and women across the country,” said Rep. Duncan. “Personally, I have experienced hearing damage from firearm noise, and I believe easier access to suppressors may have prevented much of this damage from early on in my life. Bottom line, this bill aims to fix this health issue that has already been addressed by many other countries. Now is the time to ensure sportsmen and women can have the safety and protection they need while hunting and shooting.”

Originally introduced by Rep. Matt Salmon (R-AZ-05) in 2015, the Hearing Protection Act has garnered national attention for nearly four years. However, this year marks the first time that the HPA will be introduced into a Democrat-controlled House of Representatives. Read more

An FN-signature 4.5-inch, cold hammer-forged, stainless-steel barrel with target crown, ½” x 28 threads that accept the bulk of 9mm suppressors available and thread cap with integrated O-ring to prevent loosening during use.

Lastly, the 24-round magazines, nearly identical in length to the pistol’s slide, maximize ammunition capacity without impacting carry convenience. FN 509 Tactical Black MSRP $1049. Read more

Auto-Ordnance “I Stand” 1911

(Greeley, PA) – Thompson Auto-Ordnance, maker of the famous “Tommy Gun” and other classic firearms throughout history, is excited to introduce the “I Stand” Custom 1911.

In a time period where some in America may have forgotten the true meaning of sacrifice, Kahr Firearms Group is paying tribute to those who truly gave all for America. The “I Stand” 1911 honors all those who sacrificed their lives in the service of our country. For this reason, the phrase “All Gave Some, Some Gave All” is engraved on the dust cover. At Kahr Firearms Group, we stand for the National Anthem, and behind the men and women who keep us free. Thus the words “I Stand” are engraved on the right side of the slide. “Freedom Is Not Free” is engraved on the left side of the slide, a powerful reminder of the many who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom. The American Flag is on the right grip, and the left grip depicts a battlefield memorial for a fallen warrior. The finish is a worn Cerakote in black and gray. Underneath is the same made in the USA, Auto-Ordnance GI 1911 that you know and trust.

Each pistol is a 5”, GI pattern 1911, chambered in .45 ACP. The slide, sear, and disconnector are machined from solid bar stock, properly heat treated for many thousands of rounds of reliable shooting. The sights, safety, trigger, and beavertail are GI pattern. Unlike GI guns, all Auto-Ordnance 1911s are precisely machined to modern standards. This guarantees that the GI 1911 may look like the original, but will shoot with a degree of accuracy far superior to the military guns. Owning the “I Stand 1911” gives the modern shooter a chance to own a piece of history, while making a powerful statement in support of the brave Americans who paid the ultimate price preserving our freedom.

The “I Stand” 1911 (1911BKOC1) comes with a 7-round magazine and has an MSRP of $1,313. Contact your local firearms dealer to purchase. Read more
