SAF Warns of “Toolkit” for Gun Control Lobbying

The Second Amendment Foundation is cautioning the public about a new “toolkit” for gun control lobbying groups to help them campaign for passage of so-called “red flag” laws that create “Extreme Risk Protection Orders” designed to take firearms from people based on allegations from family members, intimate partners or others, raising concerns about due process.

The document was produced jointly by the Alliance for Gun Responsibility, the Giffords gun control group and the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence.

“This document,” noted SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb, “raises alarms because there’s a lot in it about taking someone’s guns, but only two paragraphs about returning firearms to their rightful owner.” Read more

New Fishing Area for Michigan Anglers

The Elk Forest purchase provides public access to Walled Lake, a spring-fed, 44-acre double sinkhole lake. A smaller lake and pond are nearby. Adventurers also will enjoy the addition of more than a mile of the Black River, a top-quality trout stream, and a half-mile of Hardwood Creek.

Outdoor enthusiasts know that the rugged, 108,000-acre expanse of Michigan’s Pigeon River Country State Forest is one of the state’s premier destinations to connect with nature. Three world-class trout streams ramble through forests and wetlands at the heart of the state’s elk range.

What could be better than that? More of it.

A Department of Natural Resources land deal valued at more than $2 million finalized last month adds the Elk Forest at Black River, a stunning, 597-acre parcel in Montmorency County, to Michigan’s public lands. This ecologically important area is surrounded on three sides by existing state-managed land and will become part of the Pigeon River Country State Forest, known to many as “the Big Wild.” Read more

CCRKBA: Bloomberg’s “Leveraged Buyout” of the 2A Continues

BELLEVUE, WA – Anti-gun billionaire Michael Bloomberg is continuing what appears to be an attempted “leveraged buyout” of the Second Amendment as Everytown for Gun Safety—the group he co-founded and bankrolled—has pledged to spend $8 million in Texas; just part of the $60 million that group has vowed to spend in order to elect anti-rights politicians this fall.

That’s the observation from the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. Former New York City Mayor Bloomberg, seeking to buy his way into the White House by running for president as a Democrat, has weaponized his vast wealth to buy an election. But CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb is reminding Bloomberg that the U.S. Constitution is not for sale.

“Michael Bloomberg is spending a fortune on his Johnny-come-lately presidential campaign,” Gottlieb said, “but the one prize he really seems to want—a chance to turn America into his kingdom—will prove to be beyond even his financial reach. He’s tried to tell us what to eat, he’s tried to tell us how much soda we can drink and he has been unrelenting in his crusade to erase the Second Amendment from the Bill of Rights. Read more

CMP Rifle and Pistol Marksmanship 101 Schedule for 2020

By Ashley Brugnone, CMP Writer

Continuing its expansion of marksmanship safety and training around the country, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) has again created a lineup of hands-on rifle and pistol learning opportunities for the public throughout the calendar year.

Marksmanship 101, formerly known as the Small Arms Firing School (SAFS) On The Road, is designed to train beginners on rifle or pistol essentials and competition basics in a closely monitored setting, utilizing the talents of qualified CMP staff, trainers and members of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit. Participants learn through classroom discussion and active training on the range. Near the conclusion of training, students apply all they have learned in a true M16 rifle or M9 pistol match, fired under close supervision of trainers on the line.

No previous knowledge in marksmanship is required for the course, with all experience levels welcome to attend. Rifles and ammo are provided. Personal shooting jackets and gloves are permitted. Hearing protection and eye protection is also required. Read more

Michigan: ice conditions may prompt early removal of fishing shanties

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources reminds anglers that changing ice conditions could require removal of fishing shanties before required removal dates. This is a possibility every year, as all shanties must be removed once ice can no longer safely support them.

People venturing onto the ice should use extreme caution as temperatures begin to rise or fluctuate. The repeated thawing and refreezing of ice weakens its integrity, decreasing its ability to support additional weight of people, snowmobiles, ORVs and shanties. Deteriorating ice, water currents and high winds increase the probability of pressure cracks, which can leave anglers and others stranded on ice floes or at risk of falling through the ice.
