Michigan: Conservation Officer Resolves Standoff with Armed Suspect

A 39-year-old Osceola County man was arrested over the weekend after leading a Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officer on a vehicle pursuit that ended at the man’s residence. James Gross, of Leroy, was arraigned today in the Lake County Trial Court.

Conservation Officer Josiah Killingbeck was checking streams in Lake County for steelhead activity Friday night when, aware of several reports of residential break-ins in the area, he initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle with a loud exhaust and missing license plate light.

After running the driver’s information, Killingbeck confirmed that Gross was wanted on multiple warrants in Newaygo and Osceola counties. When the officer returned to the suspect’s vehicle, Gross admitted that he was aware of the warrants. Killingbeck asked Gross if there was anything in the vehicle that the officer should be aware of; at that point Gross admitted to, and began to reach for a sawed-off shotgun. Killingbeck ordered Gross not to touch the shotgun and opened the driver’s door in an attempt to secure Gross and the firearm. Resisting, Gross said, “Sorry, I can’t,” and quickly drove away. CCRKBA: Everytown Endorsement of Biden Sends Message for Gun Owners

‘EVERYTOWN’S BIDEN ENDORSEMENT IS ALL GUN OWNERS NEED TO KNOW,’ SAYS CCRKBA

BELLEVUE, WA — The campaign endorsement of former Vice President Joe Biden by Everytown for Gun Safety—the gun prohibition lobbying group bankrolled by anti-gun billionaire Michael Bloomberg—is “All gun owners need to know about the man who wants to be their next president,” the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today.

The Associated Press reported Everytown’s endorsement on the eve of “mini-Super Tuesday” primary elections in a half-dozen states, including Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri and Washington.

“There’s nothing subtle about this endorsement,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “Everytown President John Feinblatt told the Associated Press that Biden’s gun control record is clear. Biden supported the Brady Bill in 1993, he opposed the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, and he’s backed every gun control measure to ever come along.

“On top of that,” Gottlieb continued, “embracing gun ban extremist Beto O’Rourke recently in Texas was clearly a warning that if he’s elected president, Biden will make good on his threats to make radical gun control a top priority.” Read more

Contact: James Wieferich (DNR), 517-242-6300

Invasive hemlock woolly adelgid found in Mason County

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources today confirmed the presence of hemlock woolly adelgid in southern Mason County. Prior to this detection, known infestations were limited to Allegan, Ottawa, Muskegon and Oceana counties.

map of known hemlock woolly adelgid The Mason County site near Bass Lake is 4.5 miles north of Charles Mears State Park in Oceana County, previously considered the northern limit of infestation in Michigan.

Hemlock woolly adelgids are small insects that use their long, siphoning mouthparts to extract sap from hemlock trees. Their feeding weakens needles, shoots and branches. Over time, tree growth slows and trees take on a grayish-green appearance. Without treatment, infested trees die within four to 10 years. Read more
