ALEXANDRIA, VA (August 9, 2018) – The Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF) and its Take Me Fishing™ campaign announces the Top 10 Mom-Approved Places to Fish and Boat. The full list of 50 – nominated by state fish and wildlife agencies and curated by moms –- was further whittled down to the Top 10 by nearly 32,000 votes from across the United States. The list represents a full spectrum of the nation’s diverse bodies of water, from a river in Alaska to a lake in the heart of the Midwest and the shores of Hawaii.

Each Top 10 Mom-Approved Place features family-friendly amenities such as recreation areas, picnic shelters, nearby parking, boat launches, safe water access and of course, plenty of fish to catch.

“The list of Top Mom-Approved Places to Fish and Boat is a great guide for moms, kids and everyone looking to get out on the water this summer,” said RBFF VP of Communications Stephanie Vatalaro. “Creating awareness and facilitating access to resources for young anglers and their families is a key component to achieving our 60 in 60 goal.”

SIG SAUER Receives Award from DoD

SIG SAUER Receives Award from DoD for Suppressed Upper Receiver Group (SURG) with MCX Rifle System

Newington, N.H.   – U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has announced the selection of the SIG SAUER MCX System for the Suppressed Upper Receiver Group (SURG) for the existing M4A1 Carbine. The SIG SAUER MCX SURG System will be an upgrade to the current M4A1 Carbine – a fully automatic version of the M4 Carbine – that went into service in 1994.

The DoD began the SURG program to upgrade, and optimize military weapons for continuous, suppressed use on the battlefield. The SIG SAUER MCX Rifle System outperformed the competition through the demanding, rigorous, and grueling testing to receive the SURG award. The SIG SAUER suppressor withstood the stringent stress and torture requirements set by DoD for firing specifications, vibration, sound, and temperature requirements to ensure soldier safety.

“The requirements set by DOD for the SURG procurement demanded significant improvements in reliability, thermal characteristics, and durability that went well above anything we are currently seeing in the industry,” said Ron Cohen, President and CEO of SIG SAUER, Inc. “We worked very hard to develop the MCX SURG System to specifically meet and exceed the DoD requirements. I am extremely proud that our hard work paid off, and endured the stringent and demanding military testing requirements, to ultimately gain the confidence of DoD to support their operations in the field.” Read more

FL FWC waives rules in response to red tide cleanup

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) continues to monitor the red tide affecting southwest Florida.  Red tides are common along Florida’s Gulf coast, and fish populations have been resilient to the impact even after severe and prolonged red tide events.

At Gov. Rick Scott’s direction, the FWC has mobilized all available resources to mitigate naturally occurring red tide, and executive director Eric Sutton has waived rules through an executive order to expedite the removal of dead fish – regardless of applicable bag, size, or possession limits or of season or area closures – from shoreline, inshore or nearshore areas in the following counties: Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Sarasota, Manatee, Hillsborough and Pinellas. AFWA Statement on Passage of Endangered Salmon and Fisheries Predation Prevention Act

Washington  Last week the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation advanced the Endangered Salmon and Fisheries Predation Prevention Act (S. 3119). This proposed legislation seeks to provide needed flexibility and contains surgical and pragmatic amendments to the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) that will allow states in the Columbia River Basin to balance the ongoing conservation of sea lions with that of other species that also warrant protection.

Researchers have estimated that sea lions are taking up to 45% of the spring Chinook salmon run in the Columbia basin and have concluded that if sea lion predation on these stocks is not addressed in the near future, there is a 90% probability that at least one of the winter steelhead populations will become extinct. Song Sleuth Birding App Now Available for Android

App helps users identify and learn bird songs

BOSTON, MASS (August 6, 2018) – Song Sleuth (www.songsleuth.com), the popular and powerful birding by ear learning tool and bird song identifier app, is now available for Android devices.

Developed by Wildlife Acoustics in collaboration with world renowned bird expert and illustrator David Sibley, Song Sleuth is a simple to use application that provides details and auditory learning tools to help birders of all levels identify birds by ear in the field or study them while at home.

“Song Sleuth is one of many tools that can help identify a bird, but its true benefit is helping people become better birders by familiarizing them with known birdsongs in a logical, familiar way,” said Sibley.

The app features detailed information and recordings on over 200 North American birds and guides users to identify birds in the field by their song.  Song Sleuth’s ability to identify birds by their song in real-time is based on Wildlife Acoustics’ decade-long development of algorithms for wildlife study.  Its software is similar in concept to what is used in speech recognition software, but specifically tailored to the unique acoustical characteristics of bird songs. Boone and Crockett Club: Toasting the Conservation Legacy of the North American Sportsman

MISSOULA, MT – The Boone and Crockett Club, the oldest hunter-conservationist organization in North America, has entered into an agreement with Michigan-based Prestige Imports LLC tonationally distribute a line of spirits that will carry the Boone and Crockett Club name including a straight bourbon, straight rye and American blended whiskey.

“Tradition comes with age,” said Ben B. Hollingsworth Jr., president of the Boone and Crockett Club. “American-made spirits and an outdoor lifestyle are both traditions closely tied to one another. The social aspects of hunting and fishing are very strong. Sharing the day around a fire back at camp after time spent in the field or on the water make the memories complete. After 131 years, we’re proud to now offer a label that speaks for the North American sportsmen and these traditions.”

The Boone and Crockett Club was founded in 1887 by Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt assembled a group of fellow sportsmen to become the first organization to promote the conservation of wildlife on a national scale. He named this new coalition of sportsmen after the hunter-heroes of his day, Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett. Read more
