Michigan: Crew Boss Academy develops wildland firefighters into leaders

Three dozen wildland firefighters from around the country knew for sure they were going to find a lot of class work during the 10-day Crew Boss Academy at Fort Custer. The intensive workshop crams four separate firefighting management classes into busy mornings.

It was during afternoon exercises on this military base near Battle Creek, Michigan, when they got some surprises.

On the scene of a grass fire, they might encounter a person recruited to play a disgruntled landowner. Dispatched to a fire site, they might come across a simulated car accident and stop to help while calling for another engine to proceed to the fire.

“They did live fire scenarios with DNR engines on site,” said Paul Rogers, forest fire officer supervisor with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. “They were dispatched like they were going to a real fire.” Read more

FPC Issues Statement Regarding Demands for More Gun Control

SACRAMENTO, CA — Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) has issued the following statement concerning demands for new gun control following the shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas:

We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and grieve for all those affected by the hand of an evil man in Sutherland Springs, Texas; indeed, we mourn for every man, woman, and child lost to unjust violence and unconscionable circumstance wherever and however they may fall.

In the aftermath of the horrific and illegal premeditated killing at the First Baptist Church we see once more, and quite clearly, that only virtuous people bearing arms can effectively respond to those evil or insane people who, devoid of a moral core, take deliberate actions to kill and injure others when they are at their most vulnerable. And, too, such virtuous people are not limited to those in government service; rather, they are found in abundance throughout our great nation, standing as sheepdogs, vigilant for the cause of peace but prepared to defend life if needed, perhaps even at the cost of their own. Arizona man charged with deer poaching in Iowa

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – Iowa DNR Conservation Officers have charged Nicholas W. Slater, 31, of Glendale, AZ with deer poaching in Lake Manawa State Park on November 19, 2016.

Slater has been charged with the following in Iowa:

No valid non-resident deer license (Iowa Code section 483A.1(2)(K)
No valid non-resident deer license (antlered or any sex) (Iowa Code section 483A.1(2)(I))
Restrictions on taking game – illegal transportation of deer (Iowa Code section 481A.38)
Restrictions on taking game – illegal taking of deer (Iowa Code section 481A.38)
Restrictions on taking game – illegal possession of deer (Iowa Code section 481A.38)
Hunting on game refuge (Iowa Code section 481A.7)
No non-resident hunting license and habitat fee (Iowa Code section 483A.1(2)(G)).
The total fines for Slater are $2,243.20, plus liquidated damages for an antlered deer scoring 150 points or less. A judge will determine the exact total of liquidated damages.

These charges are part of a large, multi-state investigation that is ongoing.

Harvey and Irma Damage or Destroy More Than 63,000 Recreational Boats

“It could have been much worse”

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS), the nation’s largest advocacy, services and safety group for recreational boaters, estimates that more than 63,000 recreational boats were damaged or destroyed as a result of both Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, with a combined dollar damage estimate of $655 million (boats only). These numbers are strikingly close to 2012’s Hurricane Sandy, which remains the single-largest industry loss with more than 65,000 boats damaged and more than $650 million in estimated losses.

Breaking down the 2017 season storms, Hurricane Irma damaged or destroyed 50,000 vessels with approximately $500 million in recreational boat damage. About 13,500 boats were damaged or lost costing $155 million in boat damage as the result of Hurricane Harvey. Read more
