Michigan hunters help DNR meet CWD surveillance goals

The Department of Natural Resources asks hunters to submit deer from select parts of Michigan to be tested for chronic wasting disease, a fatal neurological disease impacting deer, elk and moose.

Each year, CWD surveillance goals are created to help biologists understand the extent of the disease in the local deer herd. Deer heads are still needed for testing from Jackson, Isabella and Gratiot counties and the CWD core surveillance area in the Upper Peninsula to meet the DNR’s 2019 CWD surveillance goals.

Thanks to participating hunters, surveillance goals have been met in Clinton, Ingham, Ionia, Kent, Mecosta, Montcalm, Newaygo and Shiawassee counties.

The DNR will test any deer for disease at the request of a hunter; however, once surveillance goals have been met in a specific area, the number of deer collected from that area will be limited. Read more

Michigan DNR seeks tips about bull elk poached in Pigeon River Country

Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers in Gaylord are seeking information about a bull elk that was poached in the Pigeon River State Forest, east of Vanderbilt in Otsego County.

A large, bull elk carcass was located near Ford Lake Road approximately three-quarters of a mile south of the Grass Lake and Ford Lake Road intersection. Concerned citizens found the elk Monday and contacted local conservation officers. Officers suspect that the elk was killed Saturday or Sunday. The elk’s antlers included six points on one side and seven on the other.

“We are currently following up on leads,” said Lt. Jim Gorno. “We hope that the public can help us with this investigation, as they have always been helpful in the past. This is flat out poaching. A majestic elk was killed for no reason and left to rot.”

WASHINGTON — The National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®), the firearms industry trade association, applauds the Pennsylvania legislature for passing legislation that will allow for Sunday hunting in the Keystone State for the first time in more than 100 years. Effort Comes As Record Number of Americans Embrace Right to Self-Defense

In the wake of last night’s shooting in Fresno and last week’s shooting at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, California, in which two innocent students lost their lives, the USCCA is continuing to offer free online education and training to help Americans prevent and survive a mass shooter threat. This also comes as FBI figures for firearm purchase background checks – performed via the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) – show that October 2019 was the third consecutive month of record checks, indicating that gun sales continue to rise among law-abiding Americans.

“The recent shootings in Santa Clarita, California, is tragic and heartbreaking. These are our fellow Americans, and we can all agree that something needs to change because this is happening far too often in our communities,” said USCCA President and Founder Tim Schmidt. “But the simple fact is that there is no magic wand, as witnessed by the fact that California already has some of the toughest anti-gun laws in the country.
