The Michigan Department of Natural Resources today announced plans to release approximately 100,000 Atlantic salmon into Lake Huron and two of its tributary streams this spring. Yearling Atlantic salmon will be stocked in the St. Marys River, Au Sable River, Thunder Bay River and in the Lexington Harbor in southern Lake Huron in the coming days. Read more
Michigan became world-famous when it made a daring effort to revitalize the Great Lakes sport fishery by stocking Pacific salmon in the 1960s. While Chinook and Coho fishing still remain very good overall, Michigan is now looking at residents of the other ocean to beef up the Great Lakes fishery: Atlantic salmon.

Update:
Oregon state authorities can resume killing California sea lions that feast on endangered salmon bottled up at a dam on the Columbia River, but less than one-third as many as federal biologists previously had authorized, a judge ruled Thursday.
U.S. District Judge James E. Boasberg in Washington, D.C., denied the Humane Society of the United States’ request to stop the killing at the Bonneville Dam while a lawsuit challenging the program goes forward. However, he limited the killing to 30 animals per year rather than the 92 authorized by federal authorities, and ordered that none of them may be shot.
