Anti-hunting Bill Fails to Clear Key Panel

(Columbus) –Backers of Senate Bill 1221, which would ban hunting of black bears and bobcats using hounds, failed to earn enough votes to pass the Assembly Water, Parks, and Wildlife Committee this afternoon.

“It all came down to last minute telephone calls from hunters to key Assembly members on the committee,” said Evan Heusinkveld, USSA’s director of state services.  “The folks who made those calls made the difference today.”

U.S. House Votes to Protect Hunting / Shooting on Public Land

(Columbus, Ohio) –With bipartisan support the U.S. House of Representatives today approved the most significant pro-sportsmen legislation in 15 years.  H.R. 4089, which passed by a vote of 274-146, is a package of high priority issues supported by every nationally prominent conservation and sportsmen’s organization.  The bill was supported by 235 Republicans and 39 Democrats.

USSA Launches New Blog – Protect What’s Right

GW:  Haven’t visited my friends’ site yet, but this sure looks like it’ll be a good place to network with people that are plugged in to current issues affecting sportsmen.  I am a proud member of the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance, because I want people like this fighting for my innate rights.  They take the whack jobs head on!

Today the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance launched a new blog that will be the place where American hunters, anglers and trappers can go to get the inside scoop on the politics of hunting.

The blog – protectwhatsright.wordpress.com – will feature commentary from USSA’s political experts on the hottest topics facing the sportsmen’s community.  It will also have frequent guest columns by other recognized writers and political pros. Read more

Sportsmen’s Heritage Act Clears Key Hurdle

The newly introduced House Resolution 4089—strongly supported by the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA) – has cleared the U.S. House of Representatives’ Natural Resources Committee and awaits a vote before the full House.  The bill passed the committee by a vote of 27 to 16.

HR 4089, which is a package of four high-priority bills will: Classify BLM and US Forest Service land as open to hunting, fishing and recreational shooting unless closed or restricted based on scientific evidence;    Confirm that the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cannot ban lead in traditional ammunition or in sport fishing gear; Protect recreational shooting on BLM National Monument land; and Allow the import of legally hunted polar bear trophies now tangled in federal red-tape. Federal Court Upholds Obama/Holder Gun Registration Scheme; Congressional Action Needed

Moments before this alert was to go out, a federal district court in Washington, D.C. issued a ruling upholding an Obama administration policy that requires federally licensed firearms retailers in states bordering Mexico to report multiple sales of semi-automatic rifles. The case was brought by two NRA-backed firearms retailers and by the National Shooting Sports Foundation acting on behalf of its affected members. Plaintiffs plan to appeal immediately—but in the meantime, your help is urgently needed in seeking congressional action to end this illegal policy. Read more

Obama Administration Grabs for Broader Powers

In a controversial new policy, the Obama Administration plans to broaden the reach of the already far reaching federal Endangered Species Act (ESA).  The new policy will make it easier to list more species of fish and wildlife as “endangered or threatened” and more broadly impose the ESA’s many restrictions. Greater limitations on fishing and hunting, wildlife management, and public land access are a likely result. Read more
