June 2023 – Firearm & Ammunition Exports

NSSF tracks and reports monthly U.S. export units for several sporting arms, ammunition, and optics categories from the US International Trade Commission. Below are the results for June 2023 compared to June 2022.

  • June Handgun exports decreased 61.6 percent from 47,253 to 18,144 units. Within the handgun category, Pistol export units decreased 61.1 percent from 44,824 to 17,439 units while exported Revolver units dropped 71.0 percent from 2,429 to 705 units.
    Second quarter exports of handgun units dropped 38.4 percent from 115,499 to 71,198.
  • June Rifle exports were up 1.1 percent from 36,361 to 36,766 units.
    The second quarter change in exported rifle units showed a decrease of 36.9 percent from 158,390 in 2022 to 99,894 units in 2023.
  • June Shotgun category posted a 34.1 percent increase in exported units from 6,507 to 7,264.
    The second quarter shotgun exports dropped 5.7 percent in 2022 from 22,504 to 21,220 units.
  • June Muzzleloader category increased 65.1 percent from 868 to 1,433 units exported.
    The number of units of muzzleloaders exported over second quarter 2023 rose 8.7 percent from 1,813 to 1,971 units.
  • June Other Cartridges (excluding Shotgun cartridges) category increased 8.7 percent from 66.5 million in 2022 to 72.3 million units exported in 2023.
    Exported units of Other Cartridges in second quarter 2023 increased 48.4 percent from 139.8 million to 207.5 million.
  • June Shotgun Cartridges category increased by 139.0 percent rising to 8.0 million as compared to last year’s 3.3 million.
    The total for Shotgun Cartridge units exported in second quarter 2023 was up 65.1 percent from 9.8 million in 2022 to 16.1 million.
  • Telescopic Sights:
    • June Telescopic Sights for Rifles (HTS code 9013.10.2000, which includes military use) dropped 22.8 percent from 35,867 units to 27,703.
    • The 2023 second quarter total of 94,596 units exported in this category reflected a decrease of 30.0 percent as compared to the 135,216 units exported in 2022.
  • Binoculars:
    • June Prism Binoculars [not for use with infrared light] (HTS code 9005.10.0040) increased 18.2 percent from 17,339 units to 20,490.
    • June Binoculars HTS code 9005.10.0080 [Other Binoculars, NESOI] increased 35.6 percent from 30,875 units to 41,873.
    • Second quarter export figures for Binoculars: Prism Binoculars [not for use with infrared light] (HTS code 9005100040) decreased 41.1 percent from 107,713 to 63,435 units. Binoculars HTS code 9005100080 [Other Binoculars, NESOI] increased 1.9 percent from 84,047 to 85,658 units.
  • Sound Suppressors:
    • June Sound Suppressors, Silencers, Mufflers and Similar Devices of Shotguns or Rifles of Heading 9303 (HTS code 9305.20.9100) decreased 69.9 percent, dropping from 2,106 to 634 units.
    • Second quarter export figures for Sound Suppressors, Silencers, Mufflers and Similar Devices of Shotguns or Rifles of Heading 9303 (HTS code 9305.20.9100) decreased 64.7 percent dropping to 1,296 units as compared to last year’s 3,668 units.
    • June Parts and Accessories of Shotguns or Rifles of Heading 9303 (HTS code 9305.20.9500) were up 31.9% from 67,035 to 88,433 units.
    • Second quarter export figures for Parts and Accessories of Shotguns or Rifles of Heading 9303, NESOI (HTS code 9305.20.9500) increased 10.5 percent from 224,458 in 2022 to 248,119 units exported in 2023.
