SK Guns Introduces La Catrina: The Second Release In The Folklore Series

SK Guns®, the Nation’s only series-driven, limited-edition manufacturer of custom firearms, is proud to introduce La Catrina, the second release in the highly anticipated Folklore Series. This exclusive, limited-edition run consists of only 200 Full-Size Government Colt 1911s chambered in the iconic .38 Super, making each pistol truly one of 200.

The Legend of La Catrina

Among the most iconic figures in Mexican folklore stands La Catrina, the elegantly dressed skeletal woman who has become a powerful symbol of Mexico’s celebrated Día de los Muertos, or “Day of the Dead.” Adorned with an extravagant feathered hat and an elaborate gown, La Catrina carries a graceful yet haunting presence that represents the eternal connection between life, death, and remembrance.

La Catrina originated in the early twentieth century through the work of Mexican illustrator José Guadalupe Posada, who created La Calavera Garbancera, a satirical skeletal figure mocking those who denied their Mexican heritage in pursuit of European sophistication. Renowned muralist Diego Rivera later transformed her into the elegantly dressed figure known today as La Catrina, immortalizing her in his famous 1947 mural.

Over time, La Catrina became closely associated with Día de los Muertos, celebrated annually on November 1 and 2. During this cherished Mexican tradition, families honor deceased loved ones with colorful altars, flowers, candles, sugar skulls, and offerings of food and drink.

Unlike frightening portrayals of death, La Catrina embodies its acceptance as a natural and inevitable part of existence. Her skeletal smile is a reminder that wealth, beauty, and social standing ultimately hold no power over mortality.

Today, La Catrina stands as an enduring symbol of Mexican identity, cultural pride, and remembrance—celebrating the belief that those who have departed remain forever alive through the love, memories, and traditions of those they leave behind.

“La Catrina is a celebration of life as much as a reflection on death, and that balance is what we set out to capture on the Colt 1911,” said Simon Khiabani, owner and founder of SK Guns. “From José Guadalupe Posada’s original Calavera Garbancera to the calla lilies and sugar skull that honor Día de los Muertos, every detail pays tribute to a tradition that keeps the memory of loved ones alive. We’re proud to continue the Folklore Series with a piece that is as meaningful as it is beautiful.”
