Texas Bill Introduced Protecting Knife Rights During Declared Disaster

Two companion bills have been introduced in the Texas Senate and House, SB 18 and HB 2249, that would restrict the powers of state and local government to infringe on constitutional rights during declared emergencies. Among others whose rights would be protected, it would shield businesses which engage in the knife trade, as well as knife owners, from interference by the government at such times.

In addition, two more bills with this Knife Rights-supported language have been filed. HB 3 is a comprehensive bill relating to the emergency powers of state and local officials specifically during a pandemic. HB 1500 is identical to HB 2249, but assigned a lower bill number so it can be referred to, and be eligible for, committee action sooner. NSSF Cancels 2021 SHOT Show

Statement from NSSF President & CEO Joe Bartozzi:

Due to the recent rise in COVID-19 cases throughout the world, NSSF, the firearm industry trade association, today makes the difficult announcement that the 2021 SHOT Show has been cancelled.

NSSF has remained in constant communication with Nevada officials throughout the year in our planning for the 2021 show. While there has been a concerted effort to expand the allowable levels for large gatherings by the county and state, with positivity rates peaking during our key planning period we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 show. Sadly, these spikes are currently transpiring worldwide. Given the sheer complexities, diminishing timeline and immense logistical planning required to conduct a trade show as large as SHOT, NSSF simply could not move forward at this point with so many unknowns and variables. We truly appreciate the guidance of Nevada and Las Vegas officials in allowing us to communicate this news to our exhibitors and attendees well in advance of the show. We would also like to thank the Sands directly for their help and efforts to navigate this unprecedented situation. Read more

Michigan Preemption Bill Passes House

Knife Rights’ Michigan Knife Law Preemption bill, HB 5286, the “Michigan Knife Rights Act,” was passed by the House with a bipartisan vote of 71-36. It will now move to the Senate.

Thanks to all who used Knife Rights’ Legislative Action Center to email their legislators. We will let you know when it is time to again contact legislators on this bill.

Sponsor Rep. Steven Johnson said, “One of the things my constituents sent me to Lansing to do is to clear up confusion in government. This common-sense change will ensure that law-abiding individuals carrying knives for work and recreation only need to know the state law, instead of the ordinances of multiple jurisdictions they travel through.”

Knife Rights is proud to work with Rep. Johnson on this important legislation. We believe that the citizens of Michigan, and all states for that matter, have a right to expect that the law regarding knives is consistent and consistently applied by law enforcement no matter where you are in the state. We are proud to partner with organizations like the ACLU to support this criminal justice reform legislation.

Preemption prevents enforcement of existing local knife ordinances, and prohibits new ordinances, more restrictive than state law which only serve to confuse or entrap law-abiding citizens traveling within or through the state.

In 2017 Knife Rights’ Michigan Switchblade Ban Repeal bill was enacted. HB 5286 would ensure that automatic knives are legal throughout Michigan. Read more
