POMA Set to Celebrate 10th Anniversary Business Meeting

MI DNR announces 2015 Black Lake sturgeon season harvest results

Department of Natural Resources officials today announced the 2015 Black Lake sturgeon harvest season ended after less than five and a half hours Saturday, Feb. 7, with five fish being harvested. The fishing season, which included spearing or hook-and-line fishing, was scheduled to run Feb. 7-11 or until the harvest quota of five fish had been reached.

Most anglers registered at the preregistration held Friday, Feb. 6, which allowed for a much more streamlined process. Anglers of all ages and genders participated, including a good number of supervised youth.

According to DNR fisheries biologist Tim Cwalinski, the first sturgeon was harvested around 9 a.m. It was a 67-inch female that weighed 75 pounds. Fish number two was taken at 9:33 a.m. and was a 58-inch male weighing 45 pounds. Fish three was a 69-inch female that weighed 80 pounds, taken at 12:35 p.m. Fish four was the day’s largest, a 71-inch female that weighed in at 87 pounds and was taken at 12:50 p.m. The fifth and final fish was harvested at 1:27 p.m. and was a 50-inch female that weighed 31 pounds. Free Fishing This Weekend in Michigan

Saturday and Sunday make up the Winter Free Fishing Weekend – an annual effort to encourage folks to get outside to experience Michigan’s winter water wonderland. While many individuals and families will head out to fish for free on their own, the DNR is pleased to point out there are numerous organized events scheduled throughout the state to celebrate this weekend as well.

Various counties throughout Michigan will host scheduled events; including Arenac, Baraga, Bay, Chippewa, Emmet, Gogebic, Huron, Ingham, Iosco, Mackinac, Muskegon, Oakland, Otsego, Presque Isle, Roscommon, St. Clair, Van Buren, Washtenaw and Wexford. Texas Game Wardens Seize Shark Boat in Gulf

AUSTIN – Texas game wardens have seized a Mexican shark-fishing boat in state waters near the Texas-Mexico border.

Wardens were patrolling the Gulf of Mexico earlier today for illegal fishing activity when they spotted a Mexican fishing boat moving northbound in Texas waters.

When the wardens, who were operating a 29-foot Safe Boat equipped with twin 250-horsepower motors, attempted to stop the boat its occupants ignored the state vessel and began racing back toward Mexican waters. After a brief pursuit, the wardens were able to pull along the boat and get it stopped. Read more

Rifle River Recreation Area’s Winterfest offers cold-weather funfor the whole family

With winter in full swing, the Department of Natural Resources wants residents to know there is plenty of cold-weather fun planned at Rifle River Recreation Area’s annual Winterfest Saturday, Feb. 21.

Winterfest takes place 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and visitors are invited to enjoy free coffee, hot chocolate and hot dogs over the campfire. The event also will include hayrides, and visitors can bring equipment to enjoy a variety of winter activities such as sledding, cross-country skiing, ice fishing and snowshoeing.

Mexican Poachers Interdicted by USCG Off Texas Coast

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Coast Guard interdicted one Mexican fishing vessel, Friday, after observing the vessel’s crewmembers poaching in U.S. waters.

At approximately 12:00 p.m., while on a routine patrol, an Air Station Corpus Christi aircrew aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter spotted a lancha north of the United States – Mexico maritime border and offshore of South Padre Island. When sighted by the helicopter the lancha fled. The helicopter crew then notified the Sector Corpus Christi Command Center and commenced pursuit of the lancha.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi Command diverted a crew aboard a Station South Padre Island 33-foot law enforcement boat to interdict the lancha. The Dolphin helicopter aircrew vectored in the law enforcement boat as the lancha fled toward the border. After a more than 30-minute pursuit, the lancha crew was stopped 10 miles into Mexico’s Exclusive Economic Zone. There were no injuries or damage to either the lancha or the pursuit boat after the pursuit in 4-5 foot seas. The four Mexican nationals aboard admitted to fishing illegally in U.S. waters and had 12 red snapper, 2 nurse sharks and 1 grouper totaling 150 pounds aboard their lancha. Read more

Congressional Leaders Introduce New Sportsmen’s Act in 114th Congress

Sportfishing industry is optimistic about chances for passage

Alexandria, VA – The American Sportfishing Association (ASA) applauds the introduction of the Bipartisan Sportsmen’s Act of 2015, which includes numerous legislative measures beneficial to anglers and hunters across the nation.
